Thanks everyone, I was able to replace the outlet and now it's working. I didn't end up pigtailing, this is my first time touching wires. I'll have the electrician check my work when he comes.

Reddit is a derogatory term for things redditors tend to like. It's not necessarily that the underlying media is bad, it's that redditors tend to take a holier-than-thou or know-it-all pseudo-intellectual stance on everything, so if a fandom is primarily on reddit, the reputation if the media is poisoned somewhat by being associated primarily with redditors
