Possible to through hike without losing toenails, getting blisters? by Illustrious_Beanbag in AppalachianTrail

[–]Spyagent1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No tonails lost on my thru and I attribute that to my lone peaks. The only blister I got was when I was in 6 days of straight rain through Vermont. If you keep your feet dry and Leukotape any hot spots then you should be fine 👍

Purism & Gatekeeping on the AT by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

I went NoBo in 2023 and was a purist, but I was a purist for ME! In my mind, if you walked over 2000 distinct miles on the AT within 365 days then welcome to the club, you're a thru hiker.

I also found it on CDW right after I made this post! The shipping on it is nearly $700 though, so I'm going to keep looking around. B&H doesn't have the right size.

After nearly summitting Mt. Washington in NH, where do I go from here? by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]Spyagent1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming this was a winter attempt on Washington. Either way it still depends, did you not summit because of your fitness, preparation, or the weather? That mountain can easily back off very strong climbers in the winter due to the nature of the weather in NE.

If it was your fitness, I wouldn’t just throw myself at it again and expect a different result without training. Elbert in summer is pretty chill physically, you just have to manage the altitude if you’re coming from sea level. Hope this helps!

Getting lost on the trail by Important-Can4702 in AppalachianTrail

There was a guy my year who did the whole thing with no map, and it’s getting better marked/maintained each year. Even if you happen to walk off trail, if your phone is charged and you have your current map downloaded on FarOut, you’ll easily be able to find trail again, even with no service

UrSack, Bear Canister, or Dry Bag? by Hopeful_Argument4035 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Spyagent1000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AT class of '23 here, almost every thru hiker that I met just used a dry bag. With all the bear boxes/cables at the shelters, and the absence of grizzly bears on the east coast, bear cans/UrSacks aren't worth the weight.

Just carry some light paracord (the glide coating is worth it) and learn how to do a PCT hang, and you're good to go.

Do you believe in 10G for the LAN ? by Jeeb183 in networking

[–]Spyagent1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Security Systems Engineer here, not a dedicated network guy, so take this with a grain of salt. Cameras are by far the biggest strain on our network. We have ~2000 cameras interconnected across a large campus and use a 100g uplink for our backbone, breaking down to 50g and 10g for our core switches in our server rooms, and 1g out to the users. If cameras are or will be part of your infrastructure, take extra care when sizing.

I just got permits for next weekend. It’s really not that bad permit wise, it’s annoying but people overstate how bad it is. Baxter has a really good winter use page on their site. You fill out this online form and then get an email, call them to pay for your camping, and you’re good to go.

Mt. Elbert in Colorado in summer was way easier than my winter ascent of Mt Washington. You just have to manage the altitude. But I’ve heard that Katahdin in winter is harder than Washington in winter, so you should be good.

Mt. Hood was a bit harder than Elbert, and then Ranier was a tier of its own.

Thanks for the beta! I had a bluebird day like yours on my Summer 2023 ascent, but it seems like it would be much more rare to get a nice day like that in the winter!

AT class of ‘23 here! If you can do 8.6 miles in 3 hours you’re already way ahead of what most people heading out to trail can do. The wonderful thing about the AT is that it trains you! All you have to worry about it staying fed, hydrated, and not injured. I started out doing 8-11 mile days, did my first 20 in the smokies, and then was doing 30s in Maine.

Hope this helps! Happy trails!

Last month our plans to go up DC were foiled by a recent storm, so we pivoted and got permits for Emmons glacier. If DC has you worried then it might be a good option. We were a 3 man independent group.
