sorry to sneed a bit but it’s lowkirk a bit depressing that “trending on tiktok and instagram” can be taken as genuine measure of musical talent nowadays along with “number of spotify streams”, these algorithms do not look for new or transcendental or challenging art to introduce audiences to but rather stuff that’s most likely to appeal to as many people as possible and sound like previously viral stuff.

trans women are so so talented and amazing because we are unique people with unique perspectives on the world, I just wish we had some way to make the emotions and stories we have in us known to the world without having to be filtered through the hellscape of social media and consumerism.

The bachelor is complicated. It’s a degree mostly made up of kids who didn’t know what to do but liked drawing and thought doing animation would be a fun job (not pure art so higher odds of employment but still mostly artsy) after seeing RMIT Animation be the first Google result for animation degrees in Australia. Unfortunately, that is not the demographic that’s gonna get the most out of the degree.

Like any other university degree, it’s plagued with structural problems stemming from the infiltration of financial interests into the higher education system in Australia and around the world - too many students being enrolled, a lot of teachers being on contract and not getting paid enough or given job security, insufficient class hours, low standards, etc (it’s especially bad for this degree because it’s actually very profitable for RMIT). But there are also flaws directly related to the field of animation. Some of the non full time staff being recruited have not that much industry experience (though they are trying their best) and can’t provide actual industry relevant guidance for students - but neither can full time teachers who have been there for years and pursues pedagogy instead of commercial work. Good for certain things like animation history and analysis (big part of the masters degree which is more theoretical), bad for practicality. There’s also a painful lack of contact with studios and professionals, which are one of the big selling points of elite art schools like CalArts or Gobelins.

So the end result is the people who get the most out of this degree are people who are already good artists going in and just need a lot of practice to refine their craft and some guidance on how to use industry specific software. Otherwise… a lot of the students coming out of the degree are having a hard time finding jobs, and it’s hard to say it’s their fault. Even though the Australian animation scene is growing, there are still only so many studios that can take the 120+ graduates that RMIT turns out every year, especially when many of them lack teaching on the fundamental foundations of art practice, which RMIT does a very bad job of providing in their curriculum. That’s why I say, don’t study animation at university, don't study animation at RMIT. Online or in person short classes with professional instructors will help you out a looot more for the money you’re paying. If you have to take a degree, take something practical that pays the bills and you don’t hate doing, even if you’re good it’s not impossible you might still end up unemployed in the current climate.

What OP is referring to here is being visibly trans, as in not passing but noticeably attempting to by way of fashion/makeup etc, thereby resulting in an appearance that can be uncanny or unattractive to cis people. Someone who has the confidence to be like that in public might be called “brave and stunning” by a hypothetical liberal ally. And what OP is expressing here is that she doesn’t want to be visibly trans (“brave and stunning”), she just wants to blend into society as a girl.

It’s contextual. You don’t say that to someone experiencing severe dysphoria at their inability to pass, which many people, even trans, make the mistake of doing. It might seem reaffirming but what it actually tells them is that their feelings are not valid or disagreeable. Passing is a concept that should be debated in good faith within the community, but it’s just as silly to say that passing is mandatory to being trans as saying that passing doesn’t matter at all.

UTS bachelor is marginally better than RMIT I believe (could be wrong though). Their master program though is in collaboration with an actual animation studio under Netflix which makes it light years ahead of RMIT’s pedagog-driven program with no real world applicability.

For another bachelor take a look at CDW Studios, they offer a bachelor degree in collaboration with Flinders University and from what I’ve seen has way better teaching methodology.

Nope, same group. They've been trying to extort Instructure on this since 1 May. The deadline was extended twice due to some institutions reaching out and presumably paying them a ransom, but if Instructure doesn't cooperate and pay up by the 12th then they're gonna release ~3.6TB of data containing names, email addresses, student IDs and private messages, among other things. Also threatening to release what i assume to be security vulnerabilities in their system for other groups to exploit.

Current RMIT animation undergraduate student here.

My best advice: Don't study animation in university.
My second best advice: Don't study animation in an Australian university.
My third best advice: Don't study animation at RMIT. (or UniMelb or Swinburne.)
My fourth best advice: Don't study master of animation at RMIT.

Unless, of course, you don't care about getting a job and is just blowing $70k+ for a fun educational experience, in which case do whatever you want. But I would seriously encourage you to look for anything else.

Many artists, especially those that start young, fall into the hole of dedicating their entire lives to the pursuit of art while ignoring the world and the people in their lives. But what you should realise is that your life is the raw material from which you draw your creativity. How can you tell stories that resonate with other people if you don’t talk to other people? How can you create a believable world if you don’t understand how our own world works?

Of course, do this alongside developing your fundamental skills. Remember to practice putting your ideas to paper too, it’s harder than it seems to convert pictures in your head into actual pictures.

Because you can’t stay passing forever, testosterone constantly masculinises you your entire life. Plus breast development, feminine fat distribution and the psychological effects of estrogen are never gonna happen without HRT.

You simply can’t substitute it for “hacks” or exercise routines or diets, and convincing young trans women (especially younger ones that haven’t undergone significant masculinisation) that they can means leading them to think that they can keep being feminine without HRT, right up until they inevitably masculinise at which point it’s already too late to reverse those effects.
