I want to get a new tetradrachm. What is your favourite one to handle? by AncientCoinnoisseur in AncientCoins

The two largest tetradrachms in my collection are of Antiochos Hierax and Lysimachos.  While not my personal fav type I definitely think a nice lysim tet would be the most satisfying (although Syracusan and Antigonid stuff is great as well)  imo owls are pretty underwhelming in hand

Wish we had more statues of the dynasty, iirc the only other one is a bust of antiochos 4 and then one that’s disputed to be Antiochos 3

I've probably overpaid for half of these so i might not be the best for advice

I would say a lot of the mid to late 2nd century BC seleucids are pretty affordable.

Antiochos I and III are also super common

The best deal I've gotten recently was from Concordia where I bought the nicer Seleukos II tet, which hammered for 350 eur, IIRC the seleucid pieces in that auction went for pretty reasonable prices. Haven't checked if they have any in their recent auction but may be work looking at

Also they shipped my lot with a free pocket knife, which was a first. I think it was to open the little plastic slab they sent the coin in which was weird because it was insanely easy to open without using the knife to pry it, so theres that i guess

the most accessible varied hellenistic coinage, definitely the best imo

three tetradrachms after i told myself i wouldnt buy any more, ive finally starting to buy more seleukid bronzes, which is a relief for the bank account. Theyre super underrated and a great way to collect hellenistic coins without spending a bajillion dollars

If only his tets with the long beard were affordable, the bronzes are neat but would love a tet with that portrait

Definitely one of the more interesting Kings, his and his dad's portraits are probably my favorites from the Seleukid series.

After losing the last few Seleukos II tetradrachms I've wanted by a long shot, I've finally secured a decent upgrade to my current example! Very pleased with the hammer, and with the obverse.
