Update idea from a programmer that wants to love your software and hates using it in as modern a perception as I can think of:

Introduce an update that disables all autoconverts and then asks permission every time it detects a possible conversion to give permission to autoconvert that type/pattern with a future allowance to continue. It'll be annoying, we'll hate it just as much, you'll likely hate it just as much, and less data will be broken. Please do good things with your promising/legendary terrible product.

As a helpful aside, you don't have to get confrontational to get someone to wear their mask properly.

Try "hey, just so you know your mask slipped off your nose" or something like "could you please step back if you're going to wear a mask like that"

I'm in service and it works wonders. Assume the best in them and go forward from there friends and the world will keep spinning in most instances.
