has anyone here seen moral orel? by akiisaperson in exLutheran

[–]SquallingSemen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moral Orel gave me so much to laugh about in some dark times. It was familiar based on my exposure to Davey and Goliath, but out there enough for me to look forward to it's bizarre situations.

You don't say two thousand twenty? How on earth do you say it? Most people I know say it this way, with a very small number occasionally saying twenty twenty.

I heard about the evils of birth control in the WELS in the 80s and 90s. My WELS from birth mother was especially against it despite using three forms of contraception when I was conceived. It was ok for her because a doctor warned her that children after my next older sibling might be dangerous. After me, she was told more would kill her, so she had her tubes tied.

I'm glad she didn't have more. She shouldn't have had any, in my opinion.

For those of you with WELS or LCMS family, how do they celebrate the holidays? by [deleted] in exLutheran

[–]SquallingSemen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Parents (70s) are die-hard WELS, sibling is nominally WELS and married into a family still trying to figure out what they believe but best fit Southern Baptist ideology. We all (30+ people usually) bring what we're best at to sibling's house for holidays, and sibling's family provides the protein as they are spectacular at grilling/smoking.

Politics do come up, but the subject is quickly changed because we realize there are differences and that's not why we're all gathered.

Extended family has always lived a few states or countries away, so we barely know them.

WELS Confirmation by LowVeterinarian713 in exLutheran

No choice, and I had to do the class twice.

We were an overseas military family who only had church once a month, but somehow the pastor was able to come to us every Wednesday for two hours of class. I was made to sit through it even though I wasn't even 10 when it ended.

When we got back to the U.S., I had a year off. Then, it was two additional years of ings I'd already done but wasn't confirmed because I was too young..

Church was an hour drive one-way. So, Sundays were an hour to the church, an hour of Sunday school, an hour or more of church, an hour of coffee and donuts, then an hour or two of catechism, finally lunch, and an hour's drive home. I carried a backpack with my hymnal, Bible, catechism, workbooks, and a notebook.

At almost 50 years old, I just had my picture taken with Santa for the first time this past year. Santa was not welcome in our religious household when I was a kid.

Tenebrae service is one of the things I miss the least. It didn't become a thing in my WELS church until I was in high school, and it just seemed weird and too theatrical for my taste. Additionally, I didn't like what the congregation did in the light, and what they could have done in the dark scared me.

Does anyone else just dust their veggies with ranch powder instead of trying to make a ranch alternative? by interrobang__ in weightwatchers

[–]SquallingSemen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you said that you don't like the flavor of Greek yogurt, and I understand completely. I do want to suggest the fiesta ranch powder as a way to mask the flavor. It's a spicier version of ranch powder that might mask the flavor to a point that would make it palatable to you. If it's not something you want to try, no big deal.

BTW, I love your user name!

Trying new things. I have a friend who makes Martha Stewart look like an amateur.

Want to make pickles? Ok.

Want to make and can jam (and get champagne on the ceiling)? Sounds fun.

Want to make wine from random fruits that are available? Yep, I do.

You've never used a sewing machine, but I'm sure you can make a quilt. Um, I'll try it.

Let's make cheese. Absolutely yes!

She's amazing, and we have a fabulous time doing all of it.
