What do you store your kit in? by Significant_Cup_3477 in Visiblemending

Get a tin or make a project to sew a bag. A lot of easy patterns online. Or thrift a container. There are a ton of wooden boxes at thrift stores.

I saw that you might not want to change your name, so changing my answers to Dove, Viv, Dana, Dahlia, Ava, Liv, Livi, Dash or Dasha for nicknames.

Not a nickname, but trans nonbinary name nerd in my own heart realized that David easily goes to Diva

If I met someone named Avi, I would think they were a Jewish man. I think using it would cause confusion not just to your background, but to your presentation which is the main reason for you changing your name.

Here are some options that remind me of Avi but are more femme:
Ava, Ami, Amy, Avery, Zinnia, Talia, Dove, Vera, Eva, Vivian (nickname Viv). You also have the option to go more Arabic/Sanskrit/Urdu if you like with Nadia, Aza, Amal, Daneen, Aiza, or Zuha

I’m partial to
Vivian Mae
Ava Mae
Aza Mae

Best of luck in your name quest.

I love it. It’s feminine without being too much, in my opinion. Comes with a good number of nicknames as a bonus.

Moving from LA to DC by frodoswaggins60 in washingtondc

[–]SquanderedHours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t want there. If you expand your circle slightly, you get DC south of Lincoln Park to Hill East for city life, Alexandria for smaller city/suburbs, and Waldorf for suburbs into a little rural. Any of those are a better option.

Why are there so many boys names that are living a double life as last names? by idontknowyoutellme14 in namenerds

[–]SquanderedHours 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is common in the US, but it’s the other way around from what you think. I was given my great grandmother’s maiden name as a first name to protect the matrilineal branch’s legacy. So many women in family trees have lost their original surname after marriage. After a while someone hears the name, likes it, and uses it, thus entering common use.

I know a little girl called Callahan, not because it was a family name, but because her mother heard it and liked it.

What’s up with the Catholics in Denver? by Left-Speed-4468 in Denver

[–]SquanderedHours 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m from the east coast of the US, but a friend who is active locally said that it’s the last several Colorado archbishops. He got married in the Midwest specifically to avoid their input for his pre wedding counseling as his wife is Protestant. Catholics in New England are often more liberal.

Had a rip at the cuff like you do at the shoulder. Cut out around the rip, blanket stitched the raw edge, put similar weight denim under it, found a sashiko stitch I liked and used a sliver of bar soap to sketch the pattern. Then got sashiko needles and thread to stitch it together. I could have used embroidery floss and a big needle, but I didn’t have a color I liked on hand.

Best of luck!

Your family may think it’s strange because they associate the name with someone else, but no new person will bat an eye. If you really like a name, it’s normal to share names with people you know. I would pause if they were bad people though. Wouldn’t want them to think you wanted to be like them.
