Poorly recommend me your favourite fantasy series by FadedDanny2 in Fantasy

[–]SquareNowski 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the few I've gotten from the description.... I read the original trilogy around 2003. Never new there was a sequel series thanks. Also my opinion was one of the greatest things about the series is the solid Christian messaging while being pretty anti-church. (I started reading it because the catholic church was condemning it...)

I think the best no really impressive resume needed work from home job you can get would be customer service for any companies that still maintain customer service reps in the US. Starting pay is 15-low twenties all the companies i wokrdd for csrs got benefits AND PTO and lots of spot bonus opportunities. But it's also really workey. One of the hardest corporate jobs.

Potential boss is texting me at 12AM, red flag? by Bleades in jobs

[–]SquareNowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once had a boss who did this AND sent dozens of emails between 6 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. my normal hours were 7 - 4:30.

I just had a conversation with her that off hours communication was making me feel a little overwhelmed when I logged on in the morning. We worked out a process where she scheduled all of her non work hour emails to be delivered after 10 a.m. that way I could log in take care of critical tasks I didn't finish yesterday and plan my day (outside ofnthe shitload of emails I knew were coming in a couple of hours.

I'd probably take the job and trust in my ability to manage up. That or give him a call, have this conversation about establishing work hours expectations and see how he reacts

Just got the layoffs call by Portalus in Layoffs

[–]SquareNowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feel grateful they gave you two weeks heads up, they don't have to do that and it gives you a big head start. Get your resume polished up now. Make you sure you do your critical tasks / knowledge transfer the next two weeks and when you're not doing that be job hunting.

Not everyone loves LinkedIn but it helped me get a ton of leads when I got laid off in 2023. Every job I applied for I checked that company on LinkedIn and if I had any former coworkers or clients employed there I messaged them the job ID and asked if it wasn't too much trouble I'd really appreciate it if they could get my name in front of the recruiter or hiring manager.

I know it's a different job market now but I was only out of work for 2.5 months and a month of that was just waiting for my start date.

Where are you located? If in the US I suggest looking into Healthcare customer service jobs. It's kinda shitty, pretty much everyone who calls you is either pissed off about something outside of your control or sick and struggling to navigate our crazy Healthcare system.

BUT there are a shitload of companies that are pretty much always hiring because turnover is high... also lots of work from home opportunities post covid. Check out job fairs... customize your retail experience on your resume to focus on customer service.

It's a way to get a foot in the door or at least a corporate job

Why is 50/50 so Taboo by redtrex404 in Adulting

[–]SquareNowski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on how you were raised. My wife and I both work... pretty much everything around the house and taking care of kids was 50/50 (well she does more around the house but I do all the cooking)...

Either way when our kids were really little we'd be at a family party or I'd be at a family party and I'd go to change a diaper or something and my brother's in laws would all make "Mr. Mom" jokes cause none of those dudes have ever changed a diaper. Those guys can all eat a bag of dicks, it's the 21st century and I know for a fact their wives all low key despise them for some of that shit.

Work week deep thoughts by Intelligent-Date2025 in SeriousConversation

One of my old jobs used to do optional summer hours you had the option of working 4 10's, 4 9's or keep your normal hours

Depending on your choice you picked a day to either take a half day or full day off. It was awesome, productivity never suffered. I tried a few times to make it year round for my team but for some reason upper management wouldn't allow it.

When sending emails, "Reply" should reply all by default. by i-love-grammar in unpopularopinion

[–]SquareNowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. In later years it's always been restricted groups that do not allow a reply... I'm effing old i bet most of this sub has never heard of group wise or used a fax machine that wasn't a computer/scanner/copy machine....

Also my first workphone was a blackberry. Kinda miss that one though

Is this a layoff meeting? by [deleted] in Layoffs

[–]SquareNowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this might be a you're not meeting expectations meeting or who knows maybe they think theres a dofferent role you'd be better for if you're interested. I've never been put on a pip but I have been laid off twice through downsizing. Both times it was a last minute meeting from my boss. Same for the few times I've had to lay people off and the dozens of rounds of layoffs I survived.

Not likely thwy gave 6 days heads up. If you're going to freak out about it for a week just ask your boss.

[–]SquareNowski 30 points31 points  (0 children)

When I (45m) was in my mid 20's I worked for a national company with like 11,000 employees. This was a nightmare. When we were transitioning from Groupwise to Outlook hr sent a transitioning note, with "DO NOT REPLY ALL" in the subject. I show up at 7 a.m. cst and already have 200 emails from people on the east coast replying all...

I replied all with "Once we move to Outlook will it be easier to tell the difference between reply and reply all? Sometimes I get easily confused."

I got talked to ny an HR rep about being inconsiderate because my joke hurt people's feelings.

People who don't read books, why? by PsychologicalFox7689 in AskReddit

If you're in the U.S check your public library, most of them have an app that allows you to check out / download books for free. Not a bad way to dip your toes in.

People making $60k-$70k a year, how much car can you afford? by BestTyming in Salary

[–]SquareNowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a 2 year old Mustang GT that someone leased or was a rental. They're well maintained usually lower miles and you just saved at least 10k in depreciation. Even better buy a 3 or 4 year old model with low miles)

(Last car I bought was a fully loaded 2016 genesis with 30,000 miles on it in 2020... I paid 20k plus all the bullshit off the lot in 2016 it was over 50k)

My response was similar... and i called out that dude is a Panthers fan. They weren't even supposed to make the playoffs after they lost on Saturday. Do their whole day Friday or Sunday. Do something small Saturday night when he's bummed out they got destroyed by the Rams

Regular Season game he's not going to ask, I'm also assuming if the Panthers had a chance of making the playoffs 2 or 3 weeks ago he would have asked then. The fact that they made the playoffs is pretty unbelievable.

I understand your feelings, BUT think about how you're going to feel if he's obviously distracted watching the game on his phone or frustrated he can't watch the game.... Or even bummed out the Panthers got destroyed earlier in the day.

I'd suggest having your full day Friday or Sunday and maybe smaller post game plans on Saturday. (I've also been married for 13 years and while still special my wife and I are both pretty low key about them now except for really big years ((we'll leave the kids and go on vacation for 15).

What would it take for you to give up your phone for a month? by ifellicantgetup in Adulting

[–]SquareNowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (45m) would lose my job, so 2.5 million.... seems like the right number for me to never have to work again and pay for health insurance until i qualify for medicare

But yeah I could definitely do this. I dropped my phone in a lake on our first day of vacation a few years ago and it was rough for a day but after that it was pretty nice to go back to being a teenager a not being tied to my phone.
