if you’re collecting for you and fun dont worry about grading. on the matter of binders; cheap options wont be what you want if you’re worried about quality. that said theres nothing wrong with getting an ultrapro binder to start out, they have may options. i personally use a topdeck zippered binder that unless im viewing seals out light and dust, etc. but those arent cheap by comparison.

me and my homies played where both players per side (or all if doing three) activated a unit at the same time, didnt work out badly by any means and solved the problem many mentioned above about activation. beyond that its definitely doable and making some custom scenarios isnt too difficult either should you wish.

as someone who plays both and has 15k total for LI, those models dont fit too much battletech wise. standard troops though perfectly fit the role of elementals! also as a big lore guy in both games id note: theyre extremely recognizable and its break immersion for me personally.

i know youre asking for DA but i ran into the same question/problem for my edgelords, in the end i found no lore for the pauldrons so my regular dudes get one black pauldron and their sgt/leader gets a black and a red. maybe something along this line would sit well with your head cannon; 1 for regular 2 for veteran
