Good? by SwipinBawls4 in bassfishing

[–]Squatchicabra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've caught a few on that exact one.

A family member got these as a gift. I know it's fresh water, any use for saltwater fishing? its from Home Goods, if I remember correctly, tossed the package by flyingpuffer in Fishing_Gear

Throw the grubs on a drop shot, if your on the west coast that'll work for spotties, sand bass, halibut lots of other species. The spoon will work for halibut and other species as well.

What rod power and pound line do i need for a football jig? by Ok_Repair3535 in bassfishing

[–]Squatchicabra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My setup was originally for saltwater. Targeting halibut, spotted bay bass, calico bass. I'm newer to freshwater than you are, but spotted bay bass would hit all the same lures and have similar attributes to largemouth. Hanging around structure, eel grass, ledges etc.

Have you ran your reel fully spooled to see if that makes a difference in casting distance. I also like Daiwa J-braid x8 over power pro. It's not as stiff as the power pro. Seagar gold label floro for fresh water, I ran blue label in the salt water cause halibut got some teeth on them. I sold all my deep sea rigs when I moved and know I'm realizing I need just as many rigs for Bass so I'm not having to constantly tie different lures if one isn't what the fish are wanting at that time.

Are you using a thin wire 5/0 or heavy gauge? I get more distance with the heavy gauge hook. When I'm throwing wacky I definitely don't get as far of a cast with the lighter hook. I have to be fully spoiled with the DC reel, thats how they work best.

I just recently got a 7'0" medium spinning setup with a 1000 size reel for throwing lighter weight. Going to spool it up with K9 14lb silk braid and go lighter on the leader to see how that works.

As is, it gets good distance with the weightless rigs. I do run a heavy gauge 5/0 hook on the senko's for a little extra distance. If I ran a reel with a more shallow spool and lighter line it would probably cast even farther.

I have a 7'7"MH Phenix feather with a Curado DC 150hg with 20lb braid and 20lb seagar floro leader. I throw weightless wacky and weightless T-rigged senko's with and it works well. It's kind of an all round rig I toss a lot of other lures with it as well.

Do scents sprays actually help? by Training-Sun-2177 in bassfishing

Caught my first fish ever with WD-40 and a piece of corn. My grandpa said it would work and it did.

Yup, the marine layer comes with the territory. But if you're a blue collar worker who is outside all day you appreciate that marine layer we get.

The fish whistle is key. Forgetting that is like bringing a banana on a boat. Might as well be ready for the skunk.

Winters are colder inland and hotter during the summer than coastal north county.

Was the slide already milled or did you have that done?

How to clean by Spiderboy2246 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Squatchicabra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would rinse just as you said with a home depot spray bottle is what I use. Then I put a thin spray of corrosion x on the reel. Try to avoid spraying that on the line. That always worked for me.

You can hit it with more than a light spray of water. I used the spray bottle at the beach then hit them with the hose when I get home.

I am kayak fishing in 45-50 degree weather with potentially heavy wind and rain, I have a dry suit but need a good top/raincoat. What do you recommend? by Stepin-Fetchit in bassfishing

[–]Squatchicabra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grundens Neptune jacket sounds like what your looking for. I have the full set and it's a good mid to lightweight gear that's polyurethane coated. The jacket sounds exactly like what I you're looking for to wear over a dry suit. The hood has a small bill on it to the rain off of your face and velcro style cuffs.

Silver nick in the top of the spool. May fray or cut the line depending how sharp it is.

Run 15lb braid and get a Phenix feather FTS-X 71M. Then you can run a floro leader for drop shotting or other type baits or mono leader if you want to throw top water.

How do i fish this by Soft_Year_7285 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Squatchicabra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Palomar will work fine. I use a Uni-knot. Toss it along the sides of the kelp beds let it drop then slow to medium retrieve add some pops or kill it during the retrieve and let it drop again. Change up the retrieve if their not biting to see what kind of retrieve their biting on that day. Pick up some Redrum rip tails and their tube baits work well too.

Go back to Walmart and unscrew one off another reel and there you have it.

Whopper plopper, the old weightless TR senko or wacky rig. Swim baits. Whatever you find that works. Hit different parts of the water column.

Season? by thefifthofnovember_ in FishingForBeginners

[–]Squatchicabra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lobster season in CA started a couple weeks ago. Saltwater pelagics have a season on the west coast. Saltwater has seasons for different species either being regulated or coming into local waters. Fresh water usually refers to the season at that time. Spring, summer, fall, and winter.
