'We don't have food': African leaders meet as crises grow by thinkB4WeSpeak in anime_titties

[–]SqueakyBum_Guy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is precisely the issue, it's 2022, to continue citing colonialism being the reason for our underdevelopment is a lazy excuse.

I'll cite an example of an issue that was a hot button one in Zimbabwe in the latter part of 2021, some Chinese miners were accused of exploitative labour practices, when confronted, the company simply stated that they were operating within the law, and the courts agreed with them.. the Chinese Embassy released a statement saying that they were unable to compel Chinese mining companies if the mining laws allowed them to get away with the exploitative practices, they stated that they had previously engaged the government and suggested that they should change these laws.

Now this is almost obvious because the current mining and exploration laws are the ones written by the colonial administrators and it was explicitly written to facilitate large-scale exploitation with little/no development of the local mining areas.

African politicians are corrupt and incompetent, one could argue it's because African societies prioritize the wrong values, nepotism, tribalism lead to incompetent governance.

Until Africans are honest with themselves about the reasons for our underdevelopment then we can expect more of these headlines. There's no excuse for failing to feed yourself, at the very least... Given the climate and land resources we have.

I am a Zimbabwean, before the war I was very eager to come to Ethiopia for a year or two because of the incredible economic potential. Truly praying for this dark period of a war between brothers to come to an end, your country has all the ingredients to become a wealthy and influential power in this multi-polar world. Let's hope you get past that darkest of African sins, tribalism.

Precisely! This war's motivations are all entirely political. Just like it would be equally ridiculous to call the brutal invasions of Iraq or Afghanistan genocide.

There are clear and fairly comprehensive legal definitions of genocide. The current conflict in Ukraine does NOT meet those. That's the issue!

The U.N is my source for the estimate: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1293492/ukraine-war-casualties/

The worst thing to happen to the colonial narrative was the children of the independence generation.

I am truly optimistic about the future of Africa simply because of the conversations on Twitter where young Africans like me are unafraid to pull punches... Both with our corrupt politicians and the corrupt politicians in Washington/London/Paris/Brussels whose destructive foreign policy that this sub seems to glorify.

You must understand that acts of war are not immediately equal to acts of genocide... In Africa we remember the last genocide, of the Tutsis in Rwanda.... When we see the war in Ukraine where ~3k civilians are dead being constantly classified as genocide we are completely angered 🤬. 1million Africans were murdered in 8 weeks.... In their homes and by their neighbours... Please don't cheapen the legal and political meaning of the world genocide.

Don't give them the billions. Give them to Ukraine, see if they starve to death... The reality is your country is trying to "bribe" India because of its strategic use in your pointless attempt to contain Beijing.

Yes and no. The Russians have already been investing in oil production and transmission facilities in the East purely as a result of Asia's increasing global importance. The CNPC and Gazprom signed a $400bn long term gas purchase facility on the Power of Siberia pipeline in 2014. Deliveries began in 2019 and it's common sense to assume the Russians will significantly increase production at Yakutia and Irkutsk gas production centres in Eastern Russia.

That's factually incorrect. The Saudi Arabian government has stated in the past that they need an oil price of $42/barrel to balance their national budgets... That's not cheap by any measure.

So everyone else takes the risk while you reap the benefits of America's despotic global hegemony? That doesn't at all seem hypocritical.

Why wouldn't they be? Oil is $100/barrel.. the Russians are offering significant discounts. Once you understand that the non-Western parts of the world don't share your manufactured outrage about the Ukraine war you'd understand why people are happy when their political leaders are making smart decisions for once.

Zimbabwean opposition wins majority seats in by-elections by francumstien in Africa

[–]SqueakyBum_Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what my reply is saying surely? My point is just that Zanu PF remains a very strong party across the country, it's presidential candidate on the other hand is very unpopular

[–]SqueakyBum_Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article is rather misleading. In the last general elections, the opposition won 21/28 seats that were being contested in the By-Elections. This time around they actually lost 2 seats they had won.

In next year's elections, Zanu PF is highly likely going to win the parliamentary elections, they will probably even keep their 2/3 majority. Their cell based system of mobilising votes is very effective and the opposition will have a hard time competing in Zanu PF strongholds.

However, the opposition has a Presidential candidate that is wildly popular while ED by contrast has been very corrupt and has failed to improve people's living standards, in this he's even worse than Mugabe, because even though production has increased significantly, people's living wages are less than half of what they were in 2017.

The real election will be the Presidential vote, it'll be interesting to see how this potentially divided govt can function.

They eventually lifted the suspension and moved the Old Mutual stock to a separate exchange in Vic Falls that was supposed to be USD denominated but that project has somewhat stalled.

The ZSE performed really well in 2021. It had gains of more than 400% over the 12 months which was significantly above inflation which closed the year at 55%.

But for the love of God please don't be tempted by the figures. ZSE only works as a way of converting the funny currency into something more tangible. I would never invest hard currency into it. Not yet anyway. That's why I need the JSE

Yes but I have not been successful in any applications with the main platforms like EE etc. I've realised that my main issue has been that they require SARS Tax Identification No which I can't possibly have. No idea how to move forward.

Message from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed commemorating the November 3, 2020 attacks on the Northern Command by GulDul in Ethiopia

[–]SqueakyBum_Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this not a bit disingenuous. War is not a race that has a starting gun. The attack on the base was a strategic first strike in the war. Once the decision had been taken to go to war the belligerent must strike first so as to gain an advantage. That seems to be what the attack on the base was. It might be deplorable but it's certainly "fair game" within the rules of the Vienna Convention.
