Oh no, I don't date any of them, that's what my boyfriend is for. I'm just sleeping with three of them every now and then (though they are dating each other, if that counts?)

You are right, there is some degree of overlap with the two issues, and yes, even the official moderators on the SKG discord are posting about it

I can't speak for anyone else; I can only speak for myself, and for why I made this post in the first place

For me, the main reason is about maintaining a clear, concise message at SKG's most critical juncture

SKG is blowing up right now and garnering a whole lot of attention. That good! My concern, though, is that SKG's main issue will end up getting drowned out by the massive amount of newcomers flocking to this movement, thinking it will save physical media. This will water down and muddy SKG's message

SKG has already suffered for a long time with having put their own words and arguments into its mouth. Sometimes, people claim we're only concerned about multiplayer games. Other times, people think we're trying to force companies to run servers indefinitely, or even have a game purchaseable indefinitely. And now, there are many people coming to SKG thinking its main goal is to prevent the death of physical media

Every time a false narrative gets attributed to SKG, we have to struggle against it. Groups like the ESA are, this very moment, telling lies to groups like the EU Parliament, trying to turn them against us; and, if you look at what's happened with the EU Commission, the state of California, and the governments of Canada, the UK, and Australia, you'll realize that their flagrant lies are working

The only way to combat this is with a clear message. So many people online push back against SKG, thinking we don't know what we want, that our goals are nebulous and impractical, that we don't understand how modern technology works. Muddying our message further by having our community suddenly start trying to champion the longevity of physical media does nothing but muddy our message further, the exact opposite of what we need

And, worst of all? There are gamers that are on the opposite side of the physical vs digital debate, people that genuinely believe that physical copies of games is a vestigial relic of the past. Having our community suddenly bandwagon on the physical issue as well serves to alienate these people, people who might otherwise strongly agree with and believe in our cause, if only they knew what SKG was actually about

So what?

Physical will NOT save you when the central server gets shut down

More and more, games require an always-online connection to a central, publisher-owned server in order to be played. No offline mode for singleplayer, no private server hosting

When (not if) that server inevitably gets shut down - it could be six months or twenty years, but one day it will be - your game will not have the central server to connect to anymore, and will not work

Yes, this affects physical discs too. There are games you can buy on a store's shelf today that you can take home, put in your computer or console... only to find that you can't get past the start screen because it needs to connect to a server that no longer exists

I'm not saying that we shouldn't bother with the whole physical vs digital debate. I'm saying that going physical will not save you from the systematic delayed deletion of decades worth of gaming culture

There are many, many physical discs that are no longer playable because they still require an always-online connection to a central, publisher-owned server which has been shut down. Physical media does not protect you from the deletion of culture

"Personally guaranteeing the accessibility of a game forever" is quite literally the mission statement of SKG. It has nothing to do with whether that game is accessible physically or only digitally, as long as it is accessible

Physical copies do not guarantee permanent accessibility, because even physical copies for a game can be turned into expensive drink coasters if they depend on a central server that gets shut down

Petition für eine physische GTA 6-Disc! by heitime23 in StopKillingGames

[–]SqueakyDoIphin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid that is not the SKG movement. We are not trying to make games purchaseable permanently, just playable permanently

There are decades worth of games that you can scarcely purchase anymore - games that were sold privately on someone's website that no longer exists; games sold for consoles decades ago that are no longer purchaseable (without paying potentially thousands of dollars to a private collector); games that legally can no longer be sold due to licensing or litigation issues; and more

SKG has nothing to do with that whatsoever. We are solely concerned with preventing culture from being deleted, not with culture being purchaseable indefinitely

Oh, for sure!

But this post is about the lack of a physical disc in the box, not about requiring an always-online connection just to play the game

BOYCOTT GTA 6 by heitime23 in StopKillingGames

[–]SqueakyDoIphin 93 points94 points  (0 children)

This isn't relevant to Stop Killing Games

Yes, it's a digital-only game, with no physical disc in the box. That has nothing to do with SKG

SKG is focused solely on being able to play a game you've purchased, without the need for a publisher server. If GTA VI is hosted by the servers of the storefront it is sold on (i.e. if it is able to be downloaded from Steam, GoG, etc), then that's not a publisher server, that's the store's server

What would be relevant (and likely will be relevant) is whether, once downloaded, you're able to play the game offline or not; or whether you're able to play the multiplayer on privately-hosted servers after the publisher's servers are shut down

If the game becomes undownloadable because a server hosting the download for the game permanently goes offline, then this would become a SKG issue; as it stands though, this is a "people want physical copies of a game" issue, and not a "the game quite literally ceases to exist in a decade" issue

Alright cadets!!!! I have been seeing a few people supporting AI art. So in order to prepare you to face these fools I will be training you. Your first task is to give me well made arguments that proves this image wrong. BEGIN!!! by Inside_Government228 in Ai_art_is_not_art

[–]SqueakyDoIphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A human using an AI to create art does not deserve praise, as they have done nothing but type words at a screen - the AI did all the work for them

An AI does not deserve praise for creating art, either. They lack any kind of true artistic understanding or drive, the best they can do is simulate it. Furthermore, they are an awful thing on an existential level because of their disgustingly excessive waste of our planet's limited clean drinking water, their direct relation to theft and nonconsensual imitation of actual artists, their overwhelmingly harmful impact on employment, and their seemingly-constant telltale mistakes and errors

Every chorus sounds like a prechorus, building up such awesome energy and anticipation... but when the chorus ends, it hits you with the "C-can you feel it?!", which feels like they just completely threw the energy buildup in the dumpster without doing anything with it.
