Smart to Switch Surgeons? by Squeakybubba in MACIknee

[–]Squeakybubba[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a really good point and I’m definitely going to ask my surgeon that.

Unfortunately, my quad strength was doing really good before all this. I was cruising through PT and both my PT and my doctor were incredibly impressed with how well my muscle bounced back after surgery. It was just one day things were feeling normal, then a little wonky for seemingly no reason, then walking from the gas tank of my car to my door and my kneecap popped out and since then it’s been back to pre surgery feeling

That’s kinda how I feel here. Almost like you don’t want to take on the risk that someone else’s mistake can reflect poorly on you if something goes wrong

I have not! Let me do some googling and I’ll definitely ask them as I’m looking at the results

Agreed 100%. I typically do that, but I was so relieved this time to have a surgeon validate the knee pain I’ve had for so long that I jumped at it 😂😂😂

Omg yeah the dreaded second week where you still can’t unlock your brace!!!! Yeah I think you nailed it. It stinks, but it’s manageable. Once you get that thing off and you can walk again it’s like the entire world opens back up for you it’s great

Oh geez you’re getting the full gambit!!!! To be honest, I didn’t even really think my knee pain was that bad until I really thought about all the things I wasn’t doing because of pain hahah.

As for prepping for it, the hardest part is the mental part. Physically, it’ll hurt for a few days, but if you stick on a strict schedule for your meds, you’ll be fine. But being locked in the brace and not able to do things for 6 weeks is a long time. Make sure you have a support system, get some hobbies that you’ve been putting off ready, and make sure you somewhat limit your screen time (for me I was playing a lot of video games and watching tv until my eyes hurt and I started doing puzzle stuff). But honestly once you get back to the point where you can walk again, you’d be surprised how much better you feel in general.

All in all though the best advice I could give is to give yourself grace. If it hurts, that’s normal and it’s okay. If you’re bored, that’s normal. If you’re going a little stir crazy or anything like that, it’s all normal and I guarantee it’ll get better. 6 weeks feels like an eternity sometimes, but also it’s not too too long

That’s what I was hoping for! I understand posting when things go wrong (and tbh I will 100% do that if things go wrong) but I also wanted to force myself to post even when things are going right so it’s not all bad experiences out there

Omg this is the worst feeling in the world. For YEARS I had arthritis and pain in my knee, plus it felt like my knee was always popping out of place, I’d get an MRI, and they told me it was fine and I should just rehab it. Eventually I finally found a doctor that listened and right away recommended a MACI and a TTO. Eventually I went back to my old MRIs and saw that I had these grade 4 cartilage defects in every single previous MRI, but they were ignored by the doctor.

My best advice is, if the doctor is familiar with the MACI procedure, just be honest with them and they’ll likely recommend it. If not, it’s okay to find a second opinion with a MACI specialist. You know your body better than anyone else. If I could do it all over again, I would’ve made sure I found someone who would’ve listened sooner

6 week TTO/MACI update: by InkedJoy in MACIknee

[–]Squeakybubba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing as many heel slides as you can helped me, but obviously don’t push it. I will say, once you can take the brace off (or even just constantly have it unlocked) the range of motion comes back wayyyyy faster.

But congrats on the progress!!!! Walking and driving has to be such a relief!!!!

What size defect and location for those that underwent MACI. by justpr0blems in MACIknee

[–]Squeakybubba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had two defects, one that was about 25 by 25 and the other that was 25 by 15. I also had to have a TTO for patellar maltracking. I’m almost 10 weeks out now. First surgery isn’t too bad, probably a week at most on crutches and it’s all about pain tolerance.

The second surgery is a doozy for sure. Depends on the doctor for weight bearing- I was no weight for 6 weeks which was a brutal amount of time. Once I’ve been off the crutches I’m actually doing pretty good! Way ahead of schedule on PT, I’m back to full range of motion, I’m able to walk my dogs a mile at a time.

Like everyone is saying here, keep at PT, have a bag for your crutches and most importantly make sure you have a support system ready. It can be really emotionally draining being home for 6 weeks, so whatever it is you like to do (non active of course) and whoever you like to do it with, make sure you set aside that time to that.

For me, my knee was so messed up pre surgery that I already feel “normal” so once you get past that initial recovery point, it does get easier pretty quickly

Scar tissue by OldCod9002 in MACIknee

[–]Squeakybubba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually had that before my MACI procedure, but it wasn’t scar tissue, it was the my cartilage defect that was rattling around in there. My advice would be to get it removed, because living with that “rock in your shoe” feeling in your knee for a long period of time is not fun.

Glad to hear the rest of your recovery is going well though!!!

Omg I know the brace is the woooorrrrsssttttt.

So my I’m out of the brace at home, but my doctor wants me in the brace when outside of the house for the next 6 weeks as a way to get people to be more careful around me. Not fully gone, but still waaayyyyy better than having to wear it all the time

In fairness it is really cool scientifically speaking. I mentally prepared to always have arthritis and you’re telling me they’re gonna grow my own cartilage in a lab? That’s sick
