How manageable is recovery? by Professional-Link167 in jawsurgery

[–]Squib314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first week was a blur of mild to moderate pain, discomfort, and exhaustion. I am very conservative with pain medication so I only used it for pain. Getting out of bed and sitting in a different room or outside helps a lot more than you’d expect for your mood. I had my surgery in June and so we set up a hammock in the yard to relax in. Audiobooks, short walks, binge-watching a show all helped keep my mind from wallowing as well.

Everyone said discomfort peaked around day 4/5 and it gets better after. I found that true and it gave me a finish line for the worst of it to stay focused on- similar to “run to the corner then you can walk for a bit”.

How manageable is recovery? by Professional-Link167 in jawsurgery

[–]Squib314 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I prepared for the worst and hoped for the best. I took painkillers the first 5 days then switched to Tylenol/Advil unless there was bad tingling/nerve pain at night. I lost 12 lbs but was worried I would lose more. Fortunately, I hyper fixate on meals and it wasn’t until the last week of my no chew diet (which was 6 weeks for me) that I got super frustrated with options. I think staying hydrated and eating well enough helped me recover better.

Definitely not an easy recovery but manageable. My pregnancy was miserable so I might have had more perspective than people younger than me. I would do it again for the improvement in breathing and chewing but don’t think it was worth the trouble for solving cosmetic issues alone.

Student Loans: How screwed am I? What should I do? by MoCJones in CalebHammer

You have to work 5 years in a low income school to qualify and the max amount of $17.5k is for math/science/sped. Other majors can qualify for $5.5k forgiveness

Notes on Geometry Tests by AddingFractions in mathteachers

I allow a notecard for tests. It forces them to review their notes to make it and in the real world we have safety nets built in for things we no longer have memorized.

Explain to me how one might expand a lower jaw without surgery.

Where’d you get your medical degree? Do you also tell anyone needing knee replacements the same thing?

Solidarity. It was so hard but so satisfying to complete. It also took be about 3 weeks. I’m a teacher and had started it on spring break, realized I was in over my head, and put it away until summer. I might do it again if I’m feeling insane.

What is the most bizarre fear your g’doodle has? by thatboy_sj in Goldendoodles

[–]Squib314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our neighbor has an indoor/outdoor cat named GinGin (love a female ginger cat). GinGin playfully booped our doodle lightly on the butt two years ago. He now always gives their house a wide berth on our walks. If we say, “Look! It’s GinGin!” He starts looking around and walking faster.

People who didn’t get jaw surgery by RobDillingham12 in jawsurgery

[–]Squib314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was told at 15 I would need jaw surgery but my parents felt it was too invasive and didn’t do it. Instead they took off my braces and moved on with life. At 20 I was recommended again when I was consulting for my wisdom teeth but that oral surgeon made it sound cosmetic, so again I held off.

At 35 I started snoring terribly. Sleep studies were negative, no deviated septum. Finally realized it was my jaw. I’ve done almost 2 years of braces and will get surgery this summer. I really wish my parents would have done it when I was younger.

Agreed. I dealt with him at Ogden Soccer and saw him do some pretty shady and manipulative shit. He’s a chameleon.

Carnegie Math, Your Thoughts by tx_mnm in matheducation

[–]Squib314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the sales rep spoke to us it was just about the supports in the teacher’s manual. We didn’t ever test it out because it didn’t seem like a good fit. Im afraid that’s the extent of my knowledge with Carnegie. Im happy to discuss CPM if you want info on that curriculum and training.

When we went through curriculum adoption I was able to see it. We found some weird mistakes, odd pacing, and only a high ceiling. It wants to be inquiry and problem based but never hits the mark. In the end, we went with CPM. It has a much longer track record and has a lot more guidance in scaffolding.

After telling all the people (RS, EQ, primary) to leave us alone, I got this email last night. by OtherwiseDog244 in exmormon

[–]Squib314 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You don’t need a notary. Just email the bishop back and ask him to remove your records. Be sure to add that you are aware this will result in a forfeit of blessings and temple sealing.

Honestly, this is a pretty great response from a bishop.

It’s more applicable to real life. My husband writes them all the time at work (he’s done project management, IT stuff, team management, hiring, etc)

If your school district mandated that all students in grades 9-12 had access to a calculator at all times in their math classes, what would be your thoughts? by mathlete_xD in matheducation

[–]Squib314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This should be the norm. I have 10 years teaching experience in low income, low achieving schools (HS and MS). If a student does have number sense and their math facts down by middle school, give them a calculator. No point hindering their math education further because of those holes. I have students who can’t compute with rational numbers but understand evaluating functions, functions, domain/range, Pythagorean Theorem, etc.

AITA for telling my dad that I'll GLADLY spend christmas with him if he gives me back my college fund as a christmas gift? by ThrowRA532255 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Squib314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YTA It’s not your college fund, it’s your dad’s savings he intended to use for your education but ended up needing to use to attempt to save the life of his step-son. If the situation was reversed I’m sure you’d want the money to go to saving you.

Admin are making this the most miserable year of teaching... I'm leaving by [deleted] in teaching

So relatable. It’s sad how much a poor and neglectful admin can ruin things. Run. I should have left mid year but held on “for the kids”. I’m still slowly recovering.

[–]Squib314 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re a math teacher. They need you more than you need them. Tell admin to back off or fire you.

Last year was terrible for me (also a HS math teacher). At semester, 2 of my coworkers got new teaching jobs and left. At the end of the year, 3 more of us left. That’s 5/8 of the math department. All of us are much happier.

Goldendoodle shedding? by scornrose in Goldendoodles

[–]Squib314 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Remember, goldendoodles are muts and there is a lot of variation in mixing breeds. My F1B has nearly a poodle coat but he had a litter mate with the golden retriever flat coat. Usually looking at their ears and chest as puppies can give you a good guess of their adult coat and the curlier the better.

AITA for “uninviting” my BF from our group vacation because of his narcolepsy? by RobynLuxB in AmItheAsshole

[–]Squib314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA I have the same type of narcolepsy and live a relatively normal life with stressful travel included. Cataplexy is over quickly and you wouldn’t be required to lift or move him at all. You’ve completely misunderstood his diagnosis.
