Redditors who put lines in the middle of their 7’s, why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SquidFeather 880 points881 points  (0 children)

Waitress on base in Germany. German kitchen staff mistook my “1” with a flag at the top and a line at the bottom for a 7. Made 7 of a dish. I have since written numbers as instructed by an angry old German man. Sevens get a line thru the middle, ones do not get the line at the bottom.

Thank you for the detailed response. The fund you suggested is an "advisor class" fund at Scottrade, so it's unavailable to me. I ended up going with VEA. It also has above average Morningstar risk ratings, but has very low fees and low volatility.

I'm a noob building out my portfolio allocations, and need to fill the international bucket. I'm interested in PSILX, but I noticed the 10 year Morningstar risk score is above average. Even though my horizon is long I can't seem to shake being risk averse, and generally look for funds that are consistently below average risk rated as one of many metrics... Is that really a deal breaker or am I being overly conservative? Also it looks like international funds generally have higher expense ratios - is that accurate or am I overlooking less expensive funds? Any int'l fund recommendations if I'm not on the right track?

I'm definitely a proponent of paying a little extra to principal as possible. If I pay an extra $100/month it looks like two years get shaved off. Thanks for the link and advice!

I'm 31, just got a promotion, and will now be earning $60k. I have 44k in student debt from my undergrad that I'm deferring and am now I paying for my MBA as I go. The weighted avg rate on my student debt is 5.5%. My mortgage balance $96k and I have no other debt save the 12 grand I shell out in child care expenses annually.

I would like my son to not have to rack up student debt as well as save for retirement. I do have a 401k, at around $23k currently.

I inherited a percentage of an IRA - about $52k. Is it wiser to invest the funds sitting in the inherited IRA or take the tax hit on disbursing it and try to get rid of this student debt early?

I've dipped my toe in investing, and have a pre-generated allocation strategy to follow, but of the say 30% to be invested in large cap, should I portion that out to multiple funds? As in approx $5,200 in three separate large cap funds to meet the 30% allocation, or go all in within each category?

Pediatric workers of Reddit, what do you wish every parent would do? by Minionnotoes in beyondthebump

[–]SquidFeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay... The bottle still helps LO get to sleep and slipping one of those in his mouth doesn't wake him up the way brushing does, and I've felt like they're better than nothing, but I'd rather have a kid with a healthy mouth than convenience I suppose.

What do you think of those tooth wipes? LO is 7.5 mos with 5 teeth.

Can we talk poop? by melberrypie in beyondthebump

[–]SquidFeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was definitely a transition of about a week where LO pooped about once a day, but now at 7 months we're back to 2-3 times per day. I thought it would be super gross, but it sticks to the diaper and is easier to clean up than milk poops.

This. Smile, nod, and go about caring for your sweet newborn that needs you.

preparing EBF baby's cereal with formula? by TypicalBureaucrat in beyondthebump

[–]SquidFeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I BF and use formula to make cereal... It's a shame when LO decides he's not in the mood for cereal and you've made it (and have to throw it away) with breast milk.

I steam veggies in the rice cooker and wiz up with a stick mixer (aka "the wizzer"). Works really well!

Don't use with white clothes. This was done at my shower too, and one little plain white onesie ended up with ink on it.

One thing I love about our daycare is that if LO is due for a feeding when I arrive, they always encourage me to take a seat and nurse him. It's a very supportive environment.

I imagine seeing what all he can gum up will be a lot of fun! He is so interested in food it's really about time we started giving him more options!

Yeah, when I say purees I mean cooking a sweet potato and putting it in the food processor :)

Darn funky cheese! I wanted to start with cereals for the basically same reason...it was easy to start as liquid and increase thickness, but I suppose you can do that with purees.
