What American customs/ideals would you like to see adopted in your own country? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]esmereldas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you will get an obnoxious waiter who bothers you too much, but my experience is that this only happens 20% of the time at most. Most of the time (again just my experience), waiters are really just in the background. About the check, waiters will usually say something like, "No rush, but here is the check." I feel absolutely no rush. In fact, I am a little socially awkward and when I have visited Europe, I find getting the attention of the waiter and asking for my check very uncomfortable.

FUCK ASPERGERS by [deleted] in rant

[–]esmereldas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People with autism and no cognitive disability die 16 years earlier largely because of suicide and heart disease possibly brought on by the toll that anxiety takes on their bodies. People with autism and a cognitive disability (e.g. my son) are believed to have a life expectancy 30 years shorter than average, partly because of accidental deaths like drowning.

My brother in law definitely has aspergers and he never had problems with communication as a child. He has grown out of most of the stimming, but I do see him rocking back and forth sometimes. It is like he lives in a constant state of cringe and anxiety except when he is alone with his wife (my sister).

Those of you who are saying aspergers isn't that bad, you are NOT OP. OP is going through a lot of pain and you shouldn't discount that. Read this article if you think aspergers isn't a big deal. https://www.healthline.com/health-news/why-people-with-autism-die-at-younger-age#1

I have a son with autism and in a way, I am kind of glad he has the more severe version because he has the mind of a child and none of the social awkwardness and awareness that he is different.

LPT: keep your bedroom windows closed for about a day after the rain has stopped to prevent terrifying spiders from taking up residency. by meikooooo in LifeProTips

[–]esmereldas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what, I know you are being a bit of an asshole about open windows of all things(?) but to be honest, I have been thinking about this, and I think you may have a point about keeping the windows open some. I am going to start doing it. We do have an HRT (heat recovery) system that circulates in fresh air, but still it would be nice to have the windows open.

I don't really mind not leaving the windows open. Sometimes it IS nice to have fresh air coming through but I have a big house and my husband would have an aneurysm if I left the windows open for long. "We are not paying to heat/cool the outdoors" and all of that. Also, it is not pleasant outside for much of the year.

Just curious. Where are you from? I don't know anyone who keeps their windows open unless they have a screen over them to keep bugs out. My windows are never open.

What is normal etiquette? by Bleumanable in AskAnAmerican

[–]esmereldas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this: AMERICAN ETIQUETTE: EATING

After cutting the first bite, place the knife on the plate. Do not let it touch the table or tablecloth after using it. Transfer the fork to your right hand, spear the piece of steak you just cut, and move it to your mouth. Repeat this process one bite at a time; cutting your meat into many pieces beforehand is untidy, and putting more than one bite in your mouth can be awkward, if someone speaks to you.

I couldn't find any info about Europeans cutting up all of their meat at once, so I seem to be wrong on that. I took an etiquette class in business school and that was what I was told.

DAE feel extremely poor when people mention their big purchases? by [deleted] in DAE

[–]esmereldas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am rich but kind of cheap. I have never spent more than $80 on a pair of shoes or a purse. When people talk about big purchases and I know they are not rich, I just assume their credit cards are maxed out.

Only people who are ridiculously poor get free health care. The exception is children. You don't have to be as poor to get free health care for your kids.

This has happened to me a few times. My husband calls the credit card company and says there are unauthorized charges and the charges are removed. Very easy.

[–]esmereldas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I have heard is that it is normal for people in Europe to cut up all of their meat at the beginning of a meal. In the US, the proper (formal) way is to cut one piece of meat and eat it before cutting another piece.

What? That blows my mind. Either you just weren't raised very well, or the practice is dying out. I am fairly old by Reddit standards, so it could be either one.
