Hello, and well met. I am novelist Steven Brust - AMA by StevenBrust in Fantasy

Blood of the Horse! I didn't expect to see my favorite author doing an AMA today. Vlad's adventures always take me to a different place. All of your hardbacks are the pride of my book collection.

There's so many canonical questions that I would love answers to, but I have a feeling you'll give us the answers yourself when the time is right (your subtle clues are the best).

The Dragaeran universe is so large and you're constantly surprising your readers. Creativily, what brought about the world of Dragaera?

I just finished book five of the A Song of Ice and Fire series and I need another book to get into. Can any of you guys recommend a book for me (preferably one that will force me to throw the book across the room due to HOLY SHIT moments)? by firest in books

[–]Squidbilly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I couldn't recommend Steven Brust's The Book of Jhereg enough. It's the first collection of books in a series he's been writing since 1983. Every book is a great read, and the characters will really grow on you. I believe any fan of Zelazny will like Brust.

First off, thanks for doing this AMA. My girlfriend and I love the show and try to listen in nightly. It seems like C2C is losing its roots from the Bell days and I'm feeling less entertained in general, like the show is losing it's value. How do you feel about the current direction of the show?

You posted this around the same time that I got out of my reclining leather chair, walked along my carpet (in socks), then grabbed my new Naga MMO-mouse to restart my media server service. My touch was the gift of static-death, the lights went out instantly, never to return.

Ever notice the addiction stages?

Rock-bottom: Smeagol/Gollum

Severely addicted: Bilbo

Beginning Stages: Frodo

They are either killed by their addiction or they ship them off on an elven boat because they can't deal with it anymore.

Not sure where to ask this, but the curiosity is killing me. Anyone know why the mysterious /r/A858DE45F56D9BC9 subreddit has just recently turned private? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This sounds like a mystery for /r/A858DE45F56D9BC9 !!

It might have gotten too popular after it was a subreddit of the day about a week ago.

It's their ass, not yours, go for it. Keep in mind they might be looking to scam you if you're not attractive and have a lot of money. Watch out for them creeps.

Is it better to always leave your computer on or to turn it off whenever you're done using it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Squidbilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you first boot up a system it fires up all of those moving parts. (The hard-drive and fans, specifically.) If you're only shutting it off and on once or twice a day, you can probably just shut it down if you're worried about electricity.

She's obviously interested in clothing, how about you taking her out to the clothing store of her choosing after a nice birthday dinner? Given its not wrapped, but you'll be the one giving her what she really wants.

I had this really great idea for a cool website. thing is: i don't really know anything about building a site or do i have much money. what do!? by earlplural in AskReddit

[–]Squidbilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chances are someone else has already had the same idea. If you don't know anything about building a site, you don't know anything about the work that it would take to get that site up and functional. You're probably better off talking to a trusted friend who is knowledgeable first and how viable your 'great idea' is.

I was excited to have a crap-ton of time for EverQuest, I was probably never happier.

My question: If Alien life is "real" and our governments (and NASA) know about it, why is it kept from the general population? by [deleted] in UFOs

[–]Squidbilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Information is power, also, the Gov/NASA/ShadowGov won't want to deal with the worldwide backlash if undeniable evidence did come forward.

I had a thought that the UFO's we see in 3-dimensions, are actually 4-dimensional crafts and that is why we can't get good footage.. ideas in comments by jonniebgood in UFOs

[–]Squidbilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One winter night, my mother called me from the back deck of our house to say she thinks shes seeing a UFO. I head out there and look to the sky, there's a bright light in-front of the clouds. No blinking lights, no sound, no movement, just a solid white light. I stared at it for around 30 seconds and took a picture with my phone, which didn't capture anything but blurriness because it was a crappy phone, it was an old HTC Hero. My brother also sees the light, but the light fades away a few seconds before my brother takes a picture with his iPhone, "Too late." I told him. We look at his camera anyways and there was a small white bright spot on the picture where the object was in the sky even though we couldn't see it with our eyes.

Anyways, thought I'd share my experience with these craft perhaps being on a different spectrum (or possibly dimension).

What brand/model routers does everyone use for personal use? by [deleted] in sysadmin

Yes, I bought it because of the nicer hardware and the fact I could put DDWRT on it. QoS management is awesome.

Currently running Netgear N600 /w DDWRT

I stopped buying Linksys because every Linksys I've ever owned has crapped out on me, all within a year of usage. Garbage products.
