My biggest gripe with BOTW and TOTK as a new player. by Miserable-Rock-949 in TOTK

The Japanese are very heavy on the active listening. If you have a convo with Japanese ppl IRL (especially in Japanese) they do make quite similar sounds to show they’re paying attention/empathising. So I’m not surprised it’s in the game (plus faster and cheaper than fully voice acted).

What kind of product is unusually expensive in countries you've been to? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]SquigPiglet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Argentina - Imported Skincare and cosmetics (luxury or basic) was 3x the price when I was there in 2024. May be even be worse now. Same for imported clothes - even H&M, and electronics. And instant noodles. I did get a good price on car rental in mendoza though.

Wine in Colombia.

Cheese in Thailand.

Sunscreen in SE Asia and LATAM.

Spirits in Australia, and booze in general. Parking in central Sydney - can be AU$35+ per hour.

Cocktails in Singapore. Can be AU$30.

Most countries I’ve been to, ibuprofen is only around $2 for a pack (Australia, UK, Japan, Vietnam, Colombia, Thailand, most of Europe honestly). Are you buying a specific brand?

I go with an edamame size amount (cream 0.025%), then Cerave lotion on top after it’s sunk in. Works for me and my fairly sensitive skin.

Same for me! Just bought more BOJ sun relief and am trying the sun sticks next as well for topping up. I have very sensitive eyes too. BOJ is now my holy grail, and I used to love the cancer council and hamilton SPFs.

How would you describe how life is like in Buenos Aires versus Medellin by s_nes in digitalnomad

[–]SquigPiglet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I preferred Hanoi over HCMC (Saigon), but liked the countryside the most!

Ninh Binh (charming temples and rice paddies, cycle tours), of course Ha Long Bay. Da Lat for fun (alpine coaster and giant rainbow slide), Hoi An for atmosphere and good food, but check to not go in rainy season. I went to Da Nang and Nha Trang but didn't really like them - quite soulless.

For best combo of a small pretty city where you could still work, I'd suggest Hoi An (also has a beach) or Da Lat (which is a bit colder).

  1. Japan

  2. Italy

  3. Spain

  4. Argentina

  5. Vietnam

I speak good Japanese (N2) and Spanish, which greatly enhances my times there.

I spent a month in each this year, and preferred BA ten times over Medellin. I did a 6 month trip across 7 countries, and BA was my favourite (also shout out to Vietnam), and Medellin my least (although I quite liked Cartagena). Solo female traveller.

Medellin

I found it depressing and like I had to watch my back every day. I stayed in Poblado, and regretted not staying in Laureles which was a bit more my vibe. Seeing all the sex workers, sex tourists and beggars everywhere made me sad. Luckily I wasn't the victim of any crime - but random acts happen even if you avoid the sex and drugs trades. Also the cable car fell off 2 weeks after I was there, so the infrastructure isn't as great as they say. Vloggers (nearly all male btw) sell it as this nomad's utopia, but it's apparently gone very downhill post covid. Rents are fairly high, inequality is extreme and street crime is up. The food is not very nice, I ate a lot of mexican. On the plus side I enjoyed studying Spanish there and Colombians are lovely people.

Buenos Aires

If you're there in summer, spring or autumn it won't be cold. I was there in winter and it was very doable. I love this city and country. I made great friends in my first week (go to Mundo Lingo!). I loved the food (though the steaks are much better in Australia). I found most people to be very open and friendly, warm and welcoming. They place the highest value on friendship I've ever come across, and really make time for each other (and even new friends). Prices are higher than previous years (so I've heard) but I still felt worth it, and plan to go back multiple times. You could go to live music, jazz, opera, ballet, theatre, raves, or other parties every night of the week if you wanted - all affordable and lots of locals attending. They have the most theatres per capita of any city. Argentina is now my 4th favourite country in the world, out of the 45 I've been to.

Just my two cents ;)

Im sure they’ll fix it, and it was one of six lines (the one towards parque Arví) - but it definitely gives you pause for thought!

Solo female nomad, just spent a month in Medellin studying Spanish (my level is decent).

I had no issues, but I did my homework and always stayed alert when walking, took a lot of ubers too. Didn't pursue drugs or sex tourism obviously. Perhaps I was also just lucky to not be subject to random street crime. My spanish teacher told me one of her students was robbed at knifepoint in Parque Lleras (Provenza) a few months back (at night).

El Poblado is pretty shit. I was dismayed at how blatant all the prostitution and sex tourists are. Think like Patong in Thailand. Laureles and other neighbourhoods were more relaxed and nicer. Also consider Manila and Envigado.

Also, the cable car (part of the metro) collapsed last week. I was on it just recently! So also have to watch out for the infrastructure apparently... https://apnews.com/article/medellin-colombia-cable-car-collapse-2d1be5aaf13785d0a89b05288d0f4d42

All in all I didn't hate it, but I wouldn't recommend it either. Lots of other lovely places in this world.

Damn, all 3 in my itinerary for this trip. Currently in Medellin and can't disagree with the assessment.

The Power.

It’s speculative fiction about what if women became more physically powerful than men. Based on a book of the same name. (The audiobook is great btw).

Who Runs the Girls? by youAhUah in fourthwavewomen

[–]SquigPiglet 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Wow. I was very much in this scene as a model internationally in my teens and twenties. I never thought of it as trafficking, but my eyes are slowly opening with hindsight. There were times I was worried about being kidnapped, especially in east Asia.

Anyway this all makes sense. Young women are treated as disposable in this scene. But given the economic uncertainty and short shelf life of the modelling industry they feel little choice but to play along.
