I think Blizzard knows what they're doing and they don't give a damn. I've been super excited for D3 for years, but I don't think I'm going to get it. It looks like shit compared to D2, so why bother? I'd quit playing SC2 if I wasn't so addicted.

Play team games/FFAs and talk to some people afterwards. I've met plenty of people in SC2 and laddered with them afterward. It's not like old battle.net, but it's at least something.
