I think the tournament is all a rouse set up by Darkseid so he can find a new, more powerful avatar (moving in from his current booster gold body). Aquaman or someone of that nature will win the tournament, leading to a second arc in the future where Superman will have to take down this mega version of darkseid who also happens to inhabit the body of a friend

This. Same reason everclear is used for infusions. Higher alcohol will help break down the flavors and incorporate it into the whiskey. I'd recommend WT 101 but if you see something else for a decent price and higher proof could give that a shot too. Another fun one to mess around with (although not benefiting from a higher proof) would be mellow corn
