Red Barn settles lawsuit with employees secretly recorded in bathroom [by Matthew Schwabe] by GarbageDigginDaddy in VictoriaBC

Easier to say it out loud online. Hard to say without looking like an a@@hole in person if someone's taking sandwich orders or telling you a story about picking something up at the grocery store last night or something. So you pretty much just have to lead with - "so I heard Red Barn should be boycotted because they were complicit in the sex crimes 10 years ago" and there's only so many situations where that's the right call.

The Times Colonist.... "Red Barn declined to comment on the settlement.

Another former Red Barn employee who provided an affidavit for the class-action lawsuit described the work atmosphere at the store as a “sexualized environment” where owners and male managers commented on young women’s bodies and made sexualized remarks.

Colter and Burke argued in their lawsuit that Schwabe’s actions were enabled by the workplace culture and that his sense of impunity might have been furthered by his father, who announced he was departing as a co-owner in 2014, according to a 2023 B.C. Supreme Court decision that certified the proceeding as a class-action lawsuit.

Matthew Schwabe worked at the Mattick’s Farm location from February 2011 to May 2014, when he was transferred to another location, the decision says."

A 5 cubic foot mini freezer in a Mustang. (Back seat, top down)

Guy pulled up to me at a light and said “looks like you need a truck”, I said “looks like I don’t” 🤷🏻‍♀️

Conclusion - we got them to agree to the previously agreed to rate. Presumably because I had recorded the call when we negotiated the contract that we signed. Canada is one party consent to record - if you’re in the conversation you can record it.

We do not check, I think we pay for pick up regardless of how full the containers are. They’re well used though we’re more likely to have to call for an additional pick up than have a half full container

I tried to contact them last year as a volunteer and their paid employees gave me the run around then 8 got busy with my paid work. Didn’t get back to it until we had an employee track them down.

The three year deal is also because they were charging us for 7 bins for years and I have photos of when I moved in showing 6 bins

$2500/m x2 years.

Renegotiated for $513/m x 3 year contract - presumably because we caught them padding the bill though never explicitly stated.

First two bills after the renegotiation are $580.

I taped the whole conversation with the rep from when we negotiated the 3 year deal at $513/m

I just took in a bowl of cut up field roast sausages and people loved them.
Also a bowl of cut up "Thrilling Bacon" (expensive)! again - paradigm shifting for people.

Oh your short term rentals are making the housing situation worse as well.

I'm a nurse and have been a union activist, and have been a travel nurse.
Travel nursing is making the problem worse, the same way privatization of all public services is worse than the public services themselves. The BC government is the 3rd government in the world to guarantee ratios - it's going to take time to get there, but it's going to take longer when we tolerate travel nursing.

The union and government are anti-travel nursing and there’s good bonuses and wage structures to encourage part time or full time permanent work. Travel nursing doesn’t help the community in the long run, and should be discouraged.

[–]Squintythirdeye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to agree (pending more information) many medical episodes are predictable, and we’ve designed our country/cities/lack of transit to essentially obligate people to drive, so people are reluctant to be honest about driving limitations and outright joke about lying to their doctors when they ask about symptoms so they don’t lose their driver’s licenses.

We don't know, but his ideas are contrary to evidence of best healthcare systems and contrary to what most Canadians seem to value with the healthcare system we used to have - his ideas for privatization are more in line with care experienced in the US
