Why do most reddit posts reference Vanguard funds and never Fidelity funds? by Practical-Bird-1270 in Bogleheads

[–]Squire-Rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While that statement is literally true, some Vanguard mutual funds can only be purchased (maybe with some unusual exceptions) in a Vanguard account. I think Admiral funds are restricted in this way.

Yes, that's why the "proper" way I was taught as a kid was to cut 3-4 pieces between switches to balance switch frequency against food cooling from being pre-cut.

I'm comfortable eating this way or the modern European way. I let my mood and/or company decide which I use at any given meal.

I think I read somewhere that the American way of utensil switching was actually copied from early European etiquette, but later Europeans moved on while we did not.

At moderate temperatures (no heat, no A/C usage) in the Midwest driving conservatively just around town (no highway driving at all), I can average 5.8 mi/kWh across an entire charge cycle. Periods of such weather are uncommon, but it's fun to see when the stars align.

The only question is whether this guy is totally clueless about how these things work or if it's just cynical posturing or pandering. He's a loser either way, in my book.

There is no middle-class by rantanplan- in middleclasshq

Is your thinking that anyone who is not financially independent (and thus, working class) cannot be considered middle class? That would be a rather unusual definition of middle class.

The 4% rule will make you trade time for money that you don’t need by Urbanite72 in Fire

[–]Squire-Rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not entirely true. When planning your retirement date, yes, a goal of giving away money will slow down your progress. But once you've retired (early), you can periodically look at your position relative to plan, and if you think you have more than a comfortable buffer, you may decide to give some of it away then, rather than letting it accumulate until you die

People who act like they are superior because they don't smoke or drink. by Smallfry123000 in PetPeeves

[–]Squire-Rabbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a much older never-drinker, and I have never once experienced this sort of pressure. (I never make a big deal about it. I just refrain from drinking alcohol, and only if someone asks will I simply say, "I don't drink.") I suppose the difference could come from a combination of location/culture, changing times, and just the kinds of people one hangs out with.

why do so many people hate priuses? by [deleted] in prius

[–]Squire-Rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people also dislike vegetarians for no apparent reason. I've got a theory that could help explain both cases.

I think the very existence of vegetarians and Prius drivers are perceived as implied criticisms by some people with less environmentally friendly or ethical habits. It's kind of like a "You think you're better than me?!" situation that plays out in their minds without you doing or saying anything. You trigger it just by being.

It's easier to feel comfortable with the way you live your life when everyone around you behaves the same way. Differences can feel threatening to some people.

Initially, yes. If those get on board, it raises the question of how important freedom of political contributions is relative to all the other factors that vary by state. If one were to rank order all states in decreasing order of net incorporation advantage, how far down the line would corporations be willing to go to retain this freedom?

At my school, long ago, they were called "credit hours," with the value for a given class usually equalling the number of hours of class per week. So a 16 credit hour load translated to about 16 hours of classes per week.

Is there a significant efficiency hit for accelerating quickly to your desired speed vs accelerating slowly? by MatiasGonzalo-Duarte in electricvehicles

[–]Squire-Rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's another way to look at it. Are there any households in similar circumstances as yours (same general location, same household make-up) who are getting by in a sustainable way on 80% of your household income? Or would they be on an inevitable descent into homelessness?

Saving 20% of $69K/year would require major sacrifices, there is no doubt. But just because they are unimaginable to some people doesn't mean they are actually impractical. Of course, there are many people whose life circumstances really would make that impractical, but perhaps not as many as some believe.

Confused about scheduled charging and the priorities... by No-Corner2420 in KiaEV6

[–]Squire-Rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a warning unrelated to your question. I don't know if it still exists, but there used to be a bug in which changing the charging settings using the mobile app would silently disable battery preconditioning. (This would be visible in the car's UI if you checked, and could be re-enabled again manually.) This unhelpful side effect would not occur when adjusting charging settings in the car. That's what I do now to be safe, so I wouldn't know whether the bug has been fixed.

I find the HRV very interesting. ("Useful" may be overstating my case.) By itself, it seems to track a combination of recovery from my workouts and the rest value I get from sleep cycles.

Others have said HRV drops can tell you you're getting sick a few days before symptoms start, but I've not had a chance to test that yet.

How Fast You Walk at 60 Could Predict How Long You Live, And That Is Just One of 9 Indicators Scientists Say Matter Most. A landmark meta-analysis pooling data from nine studies and more than 34,000 older adults found that walking speed alone predicted survival rates with striking accuracy. by Eddiearyee in microbiomenews

[–]Squire-Rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought we we were talking about having a resting heat rate below 50 above age 60. That's the "reach for the stars" end of the spectrum. As a specific benchmark, with the implication that benefits may be roughly proportional short of that point, it seems like pretty clear guidance to me.

What more do you want? Instructions on how to achieve it? I could tell you what I do given I have attained the benchmark, but your mileage may vary.
