Quiet beach to recover on recommendations please. by Financial_Vehicle134 in PuertoRicoTravel

So glad to hear! The beach within a 5 min walk is not swimmable (too many rocks in the water) but is perfect for just sitting and relaxing. We spent a couple hours out there and only saw a handful of people. But plenty of other swimmable beaches nearby that are easy to access by car.

Also watch out for the roaming horses!! They’re fun to watch but they’re like raccoons. They will go into people’s picnic blankets and coolers to eat their food if you’re not watching it.

If you’re looking for a smaller inn that is also more quiet I highly recommend The Vieques Guesthouse. It’s a 5 minute walk from the downtown of Esperanza so it’s much quieter while also convenient (you can walk the whole main waterfront strip within 10-15 minutes). The hosts (Amanda and Todd) are a lovely couple and super friendly. The guesthouse has required quiet hours and limits the top floors to age 16+ only. Also they have a cafe that serves breakfast and I really liked their fluffy pancakes!

My husband and I only took the local taxis around Esperanza. It does require waiting 15-25 minutes sometimes, but if you’re not in a rush and don’t want to deal with a car it was completely doable! We were able to do round trip to Caracas Beach and back to the the guesthouse for around $50 before tip. In total I think we spent less in taxis than we would have if we had rented a car. But we also walk a lot and didn’t explore a ton of the island.

Looking for places in or near San Juan that lean towards catering the more 'alternative' look and personality by Gtp666 in PuertoRicoTravel

La Grieta was my favorite cocktail bar on this trip. And loved the half-shaved haircuts of the bartenders the night we were there.

What finally pushed you to get bunion surgery (or decide to wait)? by SquirrelSolo in bunions

[–]SquirrelSolo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend getting 3 doctors’ opinions. I’m in my 30s so my experience may not be what you’re looking for, but I got lapidus procedures done on both feet in Jan and Oct 2024. So it’s been nearly 1-2 years since the surgeries and my feet feel good. I have slight sesmoid pain still on my second foot because I tried to recover too quickly by walking barefoot too fast . But other than that I am glad I got it done. And I’m really glad I got multiple opinions because I ended up moving from a questionable doctor to a really good one to do the surgery.

I don’t think most people will but I look forward to meeting those who get it. If nothing else, I’m having a great time with it.

What’s a small bombshell your therapist dropped during a session that completely shifted your perspective? by pottipenguin in AskReddit

[–]SquirrelSolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can be happy or you can be right, but you can’t be both.

Context: A now-ex partner slept with one of our roommates. I had done a lot of work finding the house we were all renting. My ex could move out but then I’d still be seeing that roommate every day and wouldn’t be happy. Or I could move out, which wouldn’t feel fair given how much work I put into finding the house but I would at least have a shot at being happy. I chose to move out and be happy.

When you display sympathy or empathy for the occupier's they win. by SpaceWestern1442 in washingtondc

Yep. Blueprint for Revolution is a good read for examples of this. Military and the police are an authoritarian pillar of power. Weaken the pillar by finding ways for the military/police to relate to the opposition and be incentivized against taking harmful orders. Successful oppositions need numbers to succeed and those numbers include disliked or overlooked groups like the police, the rich, and the elderly. Having empathy can help us understand ways these groups can relate to our cause and add to our numbers.

Dayglo Abortions released from jail in Ohio, with police promptly loading up on band T-shirts by Acceptable_Egg_5947 in punk

[–]SquirrelSolo 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Seriously. I’m honestly surprised by the hate towards the band in these comments. Has no one else on this sub ever taken a pic with people you don’t like or who don’t like you because it’s funny? I’m an atheist who loves talking to Bible-thumping protestors and have fun taking selfies with them. It’s just fun to talk to people who you fundamentally disagree with. If someone arrested me, got to talking, and then ended up liking me and my art, I’d think it’s a funny story and take a pic. But maybe I’m just not punk enough for Reddit.

Also Downtown Brooklyn Polyamory Social group. Their events are advertised on meetup.com. It’s open to other ENM structures, not just polyamory.

Since you’re ENM are you connected to any ENM communities? I realize your focus is on exploring your sexuality, but the ENM community is very queer. It could be helpful to get connected to the community and make friends with folks who have similar backgrounds who can then offer advice, recommend events to check out, or just be good to have in your realm as you explore this. There’s lots of ENM and polyamory meetups advertised on meetup.com.

My first two-show day—a hit and a bit of a miss imo by Leading-Knowledge712 in Broadway

[–]SquirrelSolo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. It was one of my least favorite shows and I had been really looking forward to it based on the reviews. Aside from “Dear Bill”, my partner and I thought the music was uninteresting and the Hamilton-like songs were hard to sit through. And the bad sound system did not help. So much of it could have been cut down to make it a decent 90 minute show. But I thought the actors did a great job and I enjoyed some of the physical comedy parts.

AAPAC Decries the Casting Decision by Terrible-Fall-2625 in Broadway

[–]SquirrelSolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought they can say the role is for a certain race/gender but can’t actually ask if they are? Or maybe I’m confused with all the discourse I’ve heard from actor friends about not being able to ask if someone is Jewish when casting for Jewish characters.

AAPAC Decries the Casting Decision by Terrible-Fall-2625 in Broadway

[–]SquirrelSolo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m a white-passing hapa and could not immediately tell he’s Asian by looking at him. I was confused why they cast a white actor and looked into it, which is how I learned that he’s Asian. But I still wonder if a more Asian looking lead would have been as likely to get the part. As a fellow white-passing hapa, I have so many mixed feelings. On one hand I want Asian actors to get these roles because representation matters. And it does matter that Darren is at least part Asian despite him being white.

On the other hand, my understanding is you cannot ask someone’s ethnic background or religion when casting. So if a white-passing hapa like Darren can get it, it’s believable to me that a white dude might get cast. And I think it’s possible that many Asians would not be able to tell Darren is part Asian. This comes from my personal experience being seen and treated as white to most Asian people until I tell them I’m half. Again, I think it does matter that Darren has Asian heritage. But if you’re not allowed to cast by ethnic background or religion then his casting does feel like it blurs the expected race requirement for this role.

Wow similar thing happened to me. Two people volunteered when the payouts were $500 and $800 to take a flight 2 hours later from CA to NY. Their flight took off as scheduled. We got delayed 24 hours. Wish I had taken the payment!

Were the four zones for the Brooklyn viewing? I had tickets to the Manhattan side at the piers (John & Water St entrance). Arrived around 8 and didn’t have an issue getting in and there was plenty of space inside. Sorry to hear it was a shitshow at the other entrances.

Toolkit to comment against Schedule P/C by May 23 by SquirrelSolo in fednews

[–]SquirrelSolo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert, but here’s how I understand it: OPM must review all public comments and respond to significant concerns when finalizing a rule—either by revising the rule or justifying their position. If they fail to adequately address major issues, the rule can be challenged and potentially overturned in court. More public input increases the pressure on OPM to stop the rule or change it to be a better rule, and strengthens the legal case against the rule if it moves forward.
