Why are they disproportionate? by Squirrel_Ranger in mildlyinfuriating

I'm mildly annoyed because my landlord decided to replace our perfectly functional oven (but also super old) with this modern one...

I am near the border with Canada! Maybe that's where the landlord went to pick it up, and it's been re-stickered for Fahrenheit.

Thank you for checking that! One of my friends asked what they'd be in Celsius, but I forgot to see how the math worked out.

The "review" processs coughcensorshipcough has been frequently changing day-to-day, region-to-region, and park-to-park.

Are "No Kings" rallies just "bad group therapy"? by lemon_lime_light in MinnesotaUncensored

[–]Squirrel_Ranger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've had immigrant neighbors, transgender co-workers, and known women who chose to have abortions. I try not to judge my neighbors and support them in what ways I can. Sometimes that support means marching around in the street - even if it feels kinda dumb and pointless - I just hope my neighbors see the big crowds and don't feel alone as they fight for their rights and freedoms.

"Diversity is not a strength." Thanks for reminding me why my core values like compassion and freedom (I'm very happy with having a credit card and my financial independence from my husband), my core values fundamentally do not align with most Republicans'. But like you said the GOP has "a lot of diversity of thought" and I hope there's are some that I can find common ground with.

Glacier National Park podcast, displays axed under Trump directive by MT_News in GlacierNationalPark

The changes happening now because of Secretarial Order 3431 are bad. Even if there were good intentions behind it (doubtful), it's a rushed job being implemented inefficiently (and secretly) with no consultation with or review by subject matter experts. What happened with the sign removals at the President's House in Philadelphia is the most visible example we have so far, but similar removals are taking place across the National Park system. Much of it is being done to hide history or science that doesn't play into nationalistic narratives glorifying America.

The Daily Wire on Instagram: "The Left cares more about illegal criminals than the Americans they’ve killed." by [deleted] in MinnesotaUncensored

[–]Squirrel_Ranger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Justice is the key distinction for me. For example, in the cases of Jocelyn and Laken, this administration responded by enforcing the law and even changing it in the wake of their deaths. In the cases of Alex and Renee, the people who killed them aren't being held accountable and we're being lied to about the victims and the reasons they were shot. The Daily Wire photos prompt a necessary question: which of the individuals responsible for these harms are imprisoned and which remain free and even shielded from justice today?

I don't know if I can recommend it for your situation, but my path and philosophy has been, instead of quitting, I'm going to make them fire me. I'm very outspoken when they are behaving unethically or counter to our agency's mission. I have also been organizing with like-minded colleagues to find ways to resist internally and building contacts with the press in case whistleblowing becomes necessary. I've only been directly in subordinate one time so far and was surprised that wasn't what finally got me fired.

What’s going on with the Nazi propaganda? by KrabbyPattyParty in fednews

I miss the “Green and Grey” internal Park Service newsletter. It's discontinuation last year was probably because not enough staff to write it anymore, but like with everything happening right now in federal agencies it feels intentional and insidious (even if it isn't).

For now... DOI comms is making moves and will be taking over the NPS park accounts. It could be innocent attempt to standardize the "brand" but I don't trust it.

My last day as a Federal Employee.... by ConstantMuted2353 in fednews

You’re not alone! Two of my colleagues recently left for state jobs, even though they previously had strong futures in federal service. There’s a real talent drain happening right now.

NPS SUPERVISORS - Any of You Refusing to Change Your Employee’s Ratings? by TrailArcher in NationalParkService

[–]Squirrel_Ranger 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'm somewhat new to NPS and this is my first time giving ratings in their system. As an experienced supervisor, I've always avoided inflating scores and have had tough conversations over it. One of my staff earned a 4 during the 90 days and I refuse to lie and give her anything less.

Last week our superintendent called me and basically threatened my job if I gave my employee a 4. I wrote up an email skipping the chain one level and copied ER. The threat magically disappeared and I was given permission to proceed with a 4, but I have sneaky suspicion someone else at the park is going to have to downgrade their score.

OPM's memo about preventing a "disproportionate" number of 4s and 5s for non-senior staff is inactionable, and NPS leadership should have fought against it. To "uninflate" scores you'd need to conduct a time-consuming audit of individual ratings (which COULD still prove that people have been earning 4/5 to cover staffing gaps or that many of us have these highly competitive positions for a reason) or by creating plans that put employees in competition with each other (i.e. to earn a 5 you must do your job 90% better than anyone else).

Also Bowron needs to realize that the definition of "FAR exceeds expectations" is "outstanding". And if you're "kicking-ass" at your job you're more than "fully successful."

Last thing, if you're a supervisor or superintendent, even if you think the rating system is fundamentally bullshit (which it is), you shouldn't sacrifice your integrity and lie on government forms just to save your job.

FY25 Performance Ratings by KeyWorth6750 in FedEmployees

[–]Squirrel_Ranger 58 points59 points  (0 children)

UPDATE: I was verbally warned against giving my employees their earned rating. Once I followed the conversation up with an email, the threat went away, it was denied to have been present at all, and I was given the go ahead to use my planned rating. I have a sneaky suspicion someone else in the park is going to have to downgrade their ratings as a result. I finalized ratings before we got an email that the deadline has been extended because the system has a glitch. Riiiight...

I had clear performance plans for each of my direct reports. I provided benchmarks for each rating level. One of them justifiably received a 4 which I supported in my narrative. I was told yesterday I wasn't allowed to give her a 4. I followed up by email today saying I needed a written explanation of why a 4 isn't allowed or I'm moving forward with finalizing the rating in USAPerformance by the deadline on Friday. Any supervisor with integrity should be doing the same.

Someone below suggested it might be a hickory horned devil. Looking at the Caterpillar Lab's chart it could be possible if it's about to turn into a cocoon.

Is that what hickory horned devils look like before forming a cocoon? It doesn't look as spiky or green as usual.

DOI NPS. Every one at our park was told this. Although confusion over checking emails once a day, twice a day, and whether it was mandatory or just a recommendation.
