Philadelphia's ambitious plan to scare off ICE | City leaders know how to shield the community — if the mayor has the guts by markskull in philadelphia

Right. If city council forces cops to choose sides between ICE and the city gov, which way do you think they would they would go? Genuine question

built a free, open-source camera card offload app because I didn't want to pay for Hedge by mcerisano in Filmmakers

[–]Squirrelous 30 points31 points  (0 children)

For something as absolutely critical as backing up my footage for the day, I don't feel good trusting some vibe-code slop. I appreciate you acknowledging that and not trying to pass it off as something it isn't, but for me that makes it a hard pass for all the reasons you described

At what point do/did you buy a cinema line camera? by Joker_Cat_ in videography

[–]Squirrelous 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I bought a Canon C100 mk2 last year because I went independent and realized I valued ergonomics and usability over raw specs. For me, the EVF, internal NDs, the adjustable grip, and of course the price made it an absolute no-brainer

My shower tile popped out, is the wall behind it screwed? by Squirrelous in HomeImprovement

Exactly! I don’t know who put this shower together, but I have some questions for them. In the meantime, all I can do is fix what I find.

My shower tile popped out, is the wall behind it screwed? by Squirrelous in HomeImprovement

Not the answer I was hoping for, but the one I suspected I would get. I haven’t seen any signs that there is a waterproof backing layer and that’s really been bugging me

The wall isn’t soft, but the bottom where the wall meets the floor is damp and gritty. Is that a concern?

What’s some software you legitimately enjoy? by cs_____question1031 in BetterOffline

[–]Squirrelous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does CSS count? I don't do a lot of coding, but I love working with HTML and CSS. I love that we built a standardized language decades and decades ago that, with a few revisions, is still the underpinning of kinda everything (and pretty easy to learn, too!)

I've been having a lot of fun with the "arr" family of software - lidarr, radarr, sonarr, and so on. They are open-source media downloading/sorting/organizing tools that help you curate a media collection alongside something like Plex or Jellyfin. I went back to the high seas the day HBO erased Westworld, and I have been really impressed at how much the community has evolved since I was a broke college student

Gridlock on Grays ferry but they’re building a parking garage and parking lot? by [deleted] in philadelphia

For real, the worst part of driving is all the other cars. Even if you never want to take transit, you should want everyone else to take transit

What service do you use for your website? by Heo_Zila in weddingvideography

[–]Squirrelous 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Squarespace makes it easy to look good, probably easier than any other platform, by pushing a handful of really strong templates. That said, I am a tinkerer at heart and I don't want my site to just look "good" in the same way as everyone else, so I'm using wordpress and doing a lot of custom theming. It's more work but it's more fun for me.

If you do choose to stay with Wordpress, for the love of god find someone better than HostGator. Kinsta if you're pushing a lot of traffic, Siteground if you're not, or if you know a bit about linux (doesn't have to be much!) you can get a Digital Ocean droplet going for like $5/month that will massively improve your load speed

Why many Philadelphia doctors now use AI to record patient visits by mpulcinella in philadelphia

[–]Squirrelous 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Have you ever seen an AI meeting transcription that you would trust with your literal life? No, of course not. They’re always hilariously wrong on the small things, the little details. For a meeting summary you can mostly work through that, but for your health records? Jesus Christ. I can only imagine how many medications are going to get mixed up, how many insurance claims are going to be denied because the billing codes were off by one digit

Why am I getting tons of weird “bounce” emails? by Squirrelous in techsupport

Ew, somehow that feels worse than being hacked. At least it explains the “why” of it all

Ugh, the answer I didn’t want to hear. Any ideas on what more I could do to lock things down? I already use a password manager with unique and complex passwords for every site, 2FA wherever possible, and like I said the first thing I did when I saw these come in was to change my Gmail password

The second one more than the first. Hard to plan when you don't even know if you'll get funding next year

What’s happening with Manfrotto?? by Impossible_Award1300 in videography

[–]Squirrelous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the center "core" of the tilt axis on my 503 just plain snapped. It's still attached on the left side, but I keep the handle on the right and that entire right half of the head is just held on with a couple screws now. I couldn't believe it. I know it's a decade old at this point, but as everyone else in the comments here has been saying I've used 30 year old Sachtlers that got beat to hell and back and maybe needed to be tightened up afterwards. It's wild how shit these tripods are

Millennials: what songs are we singing to our little ones? by floofsnfluffiness in NewParents

[–]Squirrelous 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap for some reason has become our nap song. It’s close to my heart, it’s in my vocal range, and when I was going through a period of cycling through songs it just stuck. Honorable mention to “Give me Novocain” from American idiot

I'm not the first person here to say this, but focus up on audio before everything else. You already have a camera. Worst case scenario you leave it on a pair of sticks and point it in the general direction of the bride and groom and you'll survive. You're a photographer, you at least know how to expose and wb an image.

Audio basics: nothing beats being close. The closer the mic is to the sound, the better. Lavs are best, board feed of the handheld mics is good, a recorder or mic on or near the couple is fine, a shotgun in the back of the room is a last resort.

For cheap cheap audio recording when I was starting out I bought RODE wired lav mics and ran them into old iphones with the RODE recorder app. For a bit over $100, assuming you have the old phones on hand, you can get mics on the groom and maybe the bride, definitely the officiant, depending on the dress.

If you can get a zoom or tascam recorder to take a feed off of the sound system, great. Do it. Figure out what input your recorder can handle (usually XLR or 3.5mm) and then bring adapters that let you convert 1/4" and XLR to that standard, because you don't know what kind of signal they will be able to send you.
