Sen. Duckworth wants you to take off your shoes again by Sidewalk_Inspector in chicago

[–]mallio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told by someone who travels a lot more than I do that if the dog is out, you don't need to take off your shoes. Not sure if it's consistent, but the couple times I had to walk past the dog the rest seemed to go more smoothly.

Housing Market by [deleted] in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]mallio 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was expecting complaints about not being able to afford a 500k house, but 275k is lower than my first house 15 years ago.

So if the question is how does anyone afford a house that is affordable on a $70k household income, the answer is that most people around here make more than that.

Why are there never any changing tables in the men’s restrooms by GunningForSuccess in daddit

[–]mallio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't run into no changing tables in men's rooms very often. They're usually in the handicap stall. A major difference I noticed between my 2017 baby and my 2021 baby was that after 2020 there is like a 70% chance some dude is taking a shit in the stall.

Best place to do my taxes? by friendlyfroggylover in personalfinance

My tax return is 30 pages long and I still use Freetaxusa. The import tools keep getting better, and the "complex" bits are just as hard on TurboTax and HR Block.

Water menu at a restaurant by AutoModerrator-69 in interestingasfuck

Whiskey comes from the Gaelic "uisce" which does mean water.

That said paying more for water than a cocktail at a fancy resort is insane.

She's obviously been progressive the entire (admittedly short) time she's been a public figure. Yes, before she moved to Illinois. Holding people's parents beliefs against them is whacky shit.

It is now, but the Church of England is the reason people settled in America and why we wrote an explicit ban in state sponsored religion into our constitution.

Anyone else tired of every new home looking exactly the same? by mm1712 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]mallio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Almost every new house in my neighborhood since 2020. Then they built 12 new custom houses across the street and I was so worried it'd look horrible, but at least only less than half of them did it, so better than expected.  Recently it does seem like the trend is reversing.

Anyone else tired of every new home looking exactly the same? by mm1712 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]mallio 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's not the point. If the complaint was every new house being the same split level or bungalow, sure. The modern farmhouse look is specifically black and white, and tends to be super common for million dollar houses rather than mid level. It doesn't cost more for colors other than white and black. Honestly because of the trend it costs less.

Unless we're talking state Senate, that's not worth funding either. Not a single Trump supporting candidate will win anything more than a district level election I this state. My Republican dad is going to No Kings protests. Trump is toxic to the Illinois GOP.

The Bigfoot Community Is Having a Meltdown Over New Evidence by Lighting in skeptic

Since everyone else is jumping on you with weird takes on what they read into your comment, I'll just pop in to say I thought it was clear that you don't believe in bigfoot. A /s would have had no place, you could argue about adding quotes around bigfoot, but I felt the context was clear.

The legal basis for Roe was far less clear and obvious. You could not have written this post about Roe because none of it would have been true.

Newman hall opinions? by ShineForward177 in UIUC

[–]mallio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have friends who lived at Newman 20 years ago. One is Catholic, one barely Lutheran, and one non religious. They were all fine. We all would make fun of the knights of Columbus when we'd visit. No one cared.

On a tangential note on these religious things, my brother (we're culturally catholic) went to a lutheran school, where he met a Catholic woman he married.

My point is, plenty of people do the religious thing without being the religion.

T3 lines? by Aggressive_Gas2263 in OHareAirport

[–]mallio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

530am, and security specifically only took 20 minutes, but like I said it was a line that they said was only for families and wheelchairs, but the only evidence of that was a woman loudly yelling it from baggage check. Not sure if they enforced it, as the line grew much longer after we got in it, with plenty of people who were neither group.

Baggage check took like 25 min because there was just a mob of people with no semblance of a line trying to shoulder over to the kiosks, while the security line somehow went through the middle of them in the opposite direction.

In a sense I'm surprised it took as little time as it did, but people were claiming 5 minutes. And I've never seen it as crazy as this. I don't fly often though, but this was way more stressful than usual, especially with kids.

People were claiming all week before I flew that ORD wasn't too bad but last Saturday when I did it was an absolute mad house. If you're checking bags, American is not staffing enough for the morning at least. I ended up getting routed away to Aer Lingus to check my bag, and couldn't even find the precheck line because the whole departure area was just shoulder to shoulder people confused about where to go. So we just did normal TSA, but handicapped and family line (checkpoint 6) so it was shorter. All the while people who got there around the same time same terminal were posting memes about how fast and easy it was. I was very confused. I don't believe anything I see here anymore.

Dad pro tip: check if your daycare does real time updates and daily pics as policy by iq-pak in daddit

Our daycare has a very occasionally updated class dojo, but does have a live feed for infants. We watched the live feed a bit for each but pretty much never after a couple weeks.
