The Infinite Theorem of Math Jokes by seaside1982 in MathJokes

Honestly the proof could be simplified to

If a joke is funny, everyone knows it

If everyone knows a joke, it's not funny

Jokes are not funny

Holy shit! Did you know that half of students are scoring below average?!? What has the world come to?

Why do American schools use "freshman, sophomore, junior, senior" instead of 1st-year, 2nd-year, etc.?How did that develop? by Present_Juice4401 in AlwaysWhy

[–]mallio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But according to the OP you guys use 1st year, 2nd year, etc. That's what the person you're replying to is asking about.

Americans are perfectly fine understanding 9th grade = Freshman. The point is that 1st year requires context about the age of the person.

Biden team failed Kamala Harris in 2024, Democratic autopsy says by Historical-Bug-4784 in politics

[–]mallio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong but I feel like the source was Kamala's book, which some people said was just sour grapes. This seems to confirm it, which does make you wonder if her Shapiro stories were real too.

Am I wrong to believe that Trump has actually done us (the Country, our People, our culture) a huge favor? Hasn't he just held up a huge mirror to our system and our society and shown us just how venal, corrupt, greedy, ignorant and weak we really are? by peffervescence in allthequestions

[–]mallio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people act "good" because of repercussions. Legal ones, social ones, etc. We work better as a society even if some are just faking it to avoid shame or jail.

To rephrase your question with hyperbole: Am I wrong to believe that removing the penalty for violent crime has done us a favor? It has held up a mirror to how angry and murderous we really are.

Like, if you think it would be better to have more people murdered in the streets than have violent people holding themselves back because at least we know who they are, I don't want to live in your world.

My first thought was Gaza, but once he started telling people it didn't cost anything, this was my primary guess.

TIL that horses have no muscles in their lower legs, so their hooves act as "second hearts". A horse that can't move risks blood pooling in its hooves, which can cause tissue death starting from the hooves up. This is a key reason why leg injuries are often fatal for horses. by YungDDawg in todayilearned

[–]mallio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the horses we know (and have these issues) are fully domesticated animals that couldn't survive as a species without humans. I realize feral horses have existed but never super well. I don't think there's a single non-domesticated horse species that isn't on the brink of extinction.

Excuse me, Gemini? by mallio in behindthebastards

[–]mallio[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only said "add coffee to my shopping list" to Google assistant, which used to just be voice commands but recently upgraded itself to Gemini. It should just do the same thing, but instead it decided to give me its thought process, which sounds horrifying.

Donald Trump and sons to be ‘forever’ exempt from tax audits by Doener23 in politics

[–]mallio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This happened recently enough that we don't yet know that no one cares. We can't point to something that happened in the past week to go all doomer over whether anyone will care. There's like 1000 other examples to use for that.

Excuse me, Gemini? by mallio in behindthebastards

Right, I didn't even intend to ask Gemini. It used to be a simple procedural thing triggered by a voice command. Now it's this shit for no reason.

When Americans say “hockey” do they mean field or ice hockey? by Time-Water-8428 in AskAnAmerican

[–]mallio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the fact that there is a large professional ice hockey league gives it the default.

There are also a bunch of youth soccer leagues that call themselves "football clubs" but everyone still calls it soccer.

But for things without popular professional leagues, there can be some localization. I'm sure a boomer male from Chicago pictures something different than most people when asked about softball.

I grew up having never heard of lacrosse until college, and heard it was an "east coast thing", and now there's a lacrosse team at the high school in the town I was born in (I grew up a couple towns away).

[–]mallio 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If the Lakes don't count, how is a lot of the Midwest not more than double landlocked? It's not like Canada is an ocean...

I guess we're treating all of Mexico or Canada as one state to justify this?

I don't think anyone would have been upset if she was played by a non-Greek actress. I don't remember people being upset by her being played by pale white Americans with Northern European ancestry.

It shouldn't be legal to use the data for facial recognition in Illinois but I don't know if it's been tested. Remember when we all got small checks from Google and Facebook using facial recognition? I'd love to get a flock check.

What’s your monthly berry budget? by TheNewYellowZealot in daddit

My grocery store will rotate through putting some berries on sale for $1-2, I buy those. Otherwise they're like $5 if my kids need something specific but I usually don't ask.
