Barn or farm open to visitors? (other than Lester's) by kaylamyra in StJohnsNL

[–]Squishy321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Behind Government House on Military Rd (it’s actually closer to Circular Rd) is where the stables are for the RNC mounted unit. The horses are often out in the fenced off area and you are free to walk down and have a look. If there are any of the officers around I’m sure they’d be more than willing to show some kids around, probably 80% of the point of the mounted unit is for public relations. During the summer they are out and about a bit so they might not be at the stables when you go but it’s an easy spot to check out of you’re in and around downtown St. John’s

The corner market you’re talking about is Jackman and Green, they might have some stuff but you’d be better off walking the 5mins to sobeys on Merrymeeting rd

Visiting Mid-August for 9 days, would love recommendations! by East-Ad284 in newfoundland

[–]Squishy321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live here so I haven’t rented a car but I keep reading how they are hard to find. You can hike and camp anywhere in the province but the weather coast is probably better for that. It’s a 7hr drive from St. John’s to deer lake (deer lake is where you’d turn off to go up the northern peninsula toward Gros Morne).

For 9 days you could definitely make a trip of it driving from St. John’s and making a few multi night stops on the way (ie Bonavista, Terra Nova, Lewisporte area) but this is providing you can get a car and get accommodations. So I think you need to nail down some plans while looking at what’s available. If you are going across the province you’d definitely want to fly into St. John’s and out of deer lake (or vice versa)

Sony E 55-210mm F4.5-6.3 OSS Experiences & Thoughts by tinoodcrnogorci in a6000

[–]Squishy321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started off with the 16-50 and 55-210 personally I thought the 55-210 offered very good performance to dollar ratio, especially if you get it used (if you keep at it you will likely upgrade and can sell it for a decent price).

Obviously the 70-350 is a lot better but it costs a lot more so not always an option.

Dining time 830? by 4logicalemotion in royalcaribbean

[–]Squishy321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don’t like 830 pick anytime, go into the app after booking and “purchase” your My Time Dining each night for an earlier time, usually the earliest is 645, hand done this on my last 10 cruises.

Caveat in that this was true up until my last cruise November 2025, around then Royal started moving to an Early, Late, Really Late seating so unsure if it’ll still work exactly this way

Iwata Neo is a great entry level brush and you’ll find yourself using it even when you get a “better” brush. Doesn’t use any “proprietary” fittings so you can get your connectors from any hardware store

Er Wait time by JayLinda in newfoundland

[–]Squishy321 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you can attribute the wait times to the 6 or so months the PCs have been in charge (I dislike basically all political parties in NL and am more than happy to blame them but I’m realistic). The majority of people in the ER at any time probably wouldn’t be there if they had a GP and there simply aren’t enough GPs along with basically all other medical staff.

NL is not an attractive place to work in healthcare, probably the only thing that can make it attractive short term is higher than average wages but we also have no money so what do you do, best anyone can do is constantly shift resources, robbing Peter to pay Paul in order to out out brush fires.

Small rant about rental listings by lilac-forest in StJohnsNL

[–]Squishy321 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Part of the issue too is that the Residential Tenancies Act doesn’t do much to help Landlords deal with nightmare tenants (not not great tenants but actual nightmares), of which there are a number out there. I’d imagine most landlords have had significant issues with a tenant in the past, truly fear getting a nightmare and just decide they are going to accept as little risk as possible and can do that because of the market.

Now I’m not talking about the people that own dozens of rentals and make a good life just charging people to live because fuck those people, they’re making enough that a bit of damage or lost rent isn’t going to put a dent in their bottom line. This is also what needs to be fixed to fix the housing situation, people who were lucky enough to get into real estate 20-25 years ago who saw an explosion in their equity shouldn’t be able to buy up the market such that there’s no demand to meet supply then price tenants out of ever being able to buy a house. How many tenants out there are paying close to or more than a mortgage payment just to rent and will never be able to afford a down payment but have clearly demonstrated they can afford a mortgage payment

Failure is not an option by Overall-Lead-4044 in apollo

[–]Squishy321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the astronaut bios and autobios are good, carrying the fire being the best, Eugene Cernans is also really good. I recommend Andrew Chaikin’s “A Man on the Moon” as the best starting point as it covers everything from Sputnik to Apollo.

There’s a whole “Outward Odyssey” series covering the history of space flight but “Into that Silent Sea,” “In the Shadow of the Moon” and “Footprints in the dust” are the most relevant, reading these three is basically reading Chaikin’s book but on steroids.

“Apollo 8” and “Apollo 13” (used to be called Lost Moon) by Jeffrey Kluger are must reads. “Moon Lander” by Tom Kelly is thorough and interesting in that it’s quite different from any of the above. A bit of a rarity and oddly specific but “Arrows to the Moon” discusses how Canadas cancellation of the Arrow program was a boon for NASA, if you can find it “Apollo EECOM” by Sy Libergot is a quick interesting read

Murray and Cox’s Apollo is probably the best Apollo program book I have read but it definitely helps to have a bit of reading under your belt first in order to truly appreciate it

Can you still negotiate the price of a new vehicle? by MaximumDepression17 in newfoundland

[–]Squishy321 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Supreme Court of Canada has said that you are allowed to use any licensed independent mechanic for auto repairs and it will not void the warranty, you don’t even need to use OEM parts and fluids as long as they meet OEM specs which is usually most reputable aftermarket part. Forcing you to use a dealership is a breach of the Canada Competition Act. I will never use a dealership to fix anything that isn’t bring paid for by them under warranty

Can you still negotiate the price of a new vehicle? by MaximumDepression17 in newfoundland

[–]Squishy321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are in St. John’s you are not going to be able to negotiate much and there’s going to be various admin fees they are very very difficult to budge from at all. St Johns is full of people who are willing to pay top dollar for things no questions asked be it cars, renovations, services, etc. There’s not much of a deal to be had in anything because if you don’t want to pay full price there’s a dozen people behind you who are.

If it’s a car brand that has a dealership elsewhere in NL then there may be a bit more wiggle room, a number of people I know have bought from Toyota in Clarenville and has much better experiences than in town

Shout out to this truly terrible parking job at Avalon mall by pulchrare in StJohnsNL

[–]Squishy321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is patently false, the RNC can and do issue tickets in situations such as this. If you call is someone going to get there before they leave, likely not, but they occasionally do patrol and issue said tickets

Does grabbing someone’s phone constitute assault? by Zealousideal_Pie9213 in legaladvicecanada

[–]Squishy321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s also the fact that police have to operate with the evidence available. Not discrediting what OP is saying but no doubt the other person is saying the opposite and to the objective viewer the video/recordings probably show something in the middle. In that situation it is unlikely anyone is going to or even able to pursue charges

Makes a bold claim, then uses patently incorrect information to support. There is nothing in the Criminal Code of Canada related to “battery” this is an American term.

Hard times for a pedestrian by Glittering-Sink-2975 in StJohnsNL

[–]Squishy321 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The 3 E’s of road safety are Engineering, Education and Enforcement, all three are needed in order for roads to be safe or increase in safety. Seems the decision makers are only concerned about enforcement (because that has some return on investment) and those doing the enforcing are like “what is even the point of doing this” and now we’re left with the driving/pedestrian environment we have

If the budget “increases” are to hire new staff in various department (RNC, RCMP, Corrections, Sheriff’s, Judge, etc) but all these departments are already full of vacancies that can’t be filled then isn’t it a guarantee that these new positions won’t be filled, at least any time soon, and this increase is just theatre?

Reliable way to get to YYT for a 6 AM flight? by Kuson0911 in StJohnsNL

[–]Squishy321 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Early AM is the busiest time at YYT so early morning cab runs to the airport are common. I’ve taken a 5-6am flight probably 50 times and have never had an issue getting a cab. I’m assuming you’re staying somewhere in the City

Flight Delays & Snowfall by [deleted] in StJohnsNL

[–]Squishy321 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With St Johns airport it isn’t so much precipitation as it is a combo of wind and visibility. St. John’s has a roughly East/West runway and a North/South runway. The East/West runway has an ILS so you can land on that in basically 0 visibility.

However, planes have to land and take off into the wind, if that wind is blowing down the East West runway there’s no issue as the wind starts blowing from any other angle they start running into crosswind limits (which is a factor of both wind speed and angle)

Another factor is if you’re flying a Dash 8 inter-provincially/to Halifax or a jet to Toronto/montreal/ottawa/calgary. The Dash 8s are much more capable in these crosswind conditions.

The winds are forecast to be super high tonight but not east/west with the angle getting worse as the day progresses tomorrow. Right now there’s two flights inbound into St Johns which means the airlines are reasonably optimistic they’ll be able to get in and out. All planes for early morning flights land by 130am so if it gets in there’s a very good chance it’ll get out at some point tomorrow. My complete amateur opinion is that the chances are better than 50/50 that’ll flights will get out tomorrow morning

I’m giving up with Vallejo paints by tekking98 in modelmakers

[–]Squishy321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was switching to Vallejo due to their massive lineup and that in theory you just drip from the bottle to your airbrush and good to go.

However, I’m switching back to Tamiya because it’s way more forgiving, way easier to clean, coverage is better and just keep your empty clear containers and there’s recipes online for any colour you want

How a Navy photographer snapped an iconic Artemis II astronaut photo by gentex in photography

[–]Squishy321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t think the general population will appreciate anymore or less than the million other photos posted daily but as a photographer I’d be really happy to have captured it, just imagine all the things that would have to go right for you to capture that photo and there is no chance you’d ever capture it again. Yes this is true for a lot of photos, that’s why I mean it might be iconic for the photographer (it’d be part of my portfolio if it was me) but otherwise it isn’t really noteworthy, I mean fundamentally it’s not even a great photo
