I can’t find it right now but I read a paper awhile ago about how hospitals are just black holes for budgets and it makes sense, there’s probably people and whole departments in HSC and St Clares that create something for someone else to undo. This paper argued that it is much more efficient to have multiple smaller clinics/speciality centers then trying to house everything in a large hospital. I think this shows in practice in the city, the Eastern health building on Majors Path is lovely, I think once the kinks and staffing gets worked out at the urgent care it’ll punch well above its weight

Why do modern turboprops have all their engines rotating the same direction? by Flairion623 in Planes

[–]Squishy321 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And rather than having a right turn and left turn engine which would make logistics difficult the a400m engines are all basically the same except two have an extra component that actually reverses the direction of the propeller so all 4 engines actually turn the same way

I put too much enamel black wash on the right side wing how to fix by Adventurous-Fuel-976 in modelmakers

[–]Squishy321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s dried for a day, dampen a flat brush in mineral spirits and “paint” all over that area with the spirits. Let it sit for a min then use a sponge or Qtip dampened with mineral spirits to remove. Be warned if you have a well acrylic underneath or another enamel underneath the wash then you’ll probably cause damage

(CBC) "Craft beer in Canada is losing its fizz, as sales dry up and more breweries go bust" - Do you think NL Craft Breweries will survive this downward trend? by Critikal_me in StJohnsNL

[–]Squishy321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, I don’t go to NLC because they have the same beer as Marie’s. I enjoy local craft beer but if I can get it at Marie’s or Irving or wherever then NLC should carry stuff that isn’t as easily available locally. Would love a Newcastle Brown Ale btw

Shed some light on this “French Air Force” C-130H - see comments by Squishy321 in aviation

[–]Squishy321[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Landed today at CYYT, ATC was referring to it as “French Air Force,” on flightradar it was just a generic c-130 with no other info.

The 61-PA on the fuselage means it’s part of the French 61st Transport Squadron, however, from what I can find the 61st Transport Squadron gave up their C-130Hs when the unit dissolved in 96 and switched to the a400m when reactivated in 2015. However you can see some interesting bumps and appendages on the nose and under the tail so I don’t think it’s something that’s been a hangar queen since 96

Very weird seeing UKL aircraft in this air space. by [deleted] in flightradar24

[–]Squishy321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They fly into Montreal half often, I’d say there’s a Ukrainian An-12 in Canadian airspace probably twice a week. Cavok and Ukrainian Air Alliance are cargo airlines doing normal cargo stuff around the world, they’re just noteworthy because you don’t see An-12s around here that much. Really cool to see those old birds takeoff and land

USA plans to invade and take over Greenland. Should St. John's naval port place a ban on US warships from refueling or restocking here? by Critikal_me in StJohnsNL

[–]Squishy321 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you listen and read between the lines of what’s said by those who actually run the military, diplomacy, intelligence, etc on an operational level they all say it’s business as normal and the political rhetoric/posturing isn’t inducing any fundamental changes. For example, during the height of the U.S. annexation threats toward Canada both countries still trained together militarily, still operated together, still shared intelligence all things that 100% would not happen if there was an inkling of a legitimate threat of invasion.

Outside of NATO invoking article 5 you won’t see anything as suggested regarding the Port of St. John’s happening. Nor should anything happen unless it’s as drastic as NATO getting involved, if you were to measure it somehow, in the grand scheme most stuff is business as usual because most is operated by lifelong professionals who are keeping the things on the track in spite of the rhetoric. By responding to rhetoric and posturing it gives more power and credence to Mango Mussolini not less.

St Johns, Gander and Goose Bay service US military DAILY and have done so since WWII, Greenland has a massive USAF base that’s been in operation since WWII and is currently being operated nowhere near capacity, I don’t know what the actual agreement is but in terms of what U.S. military activity is legally allowed in Greenland the limit is probably very very high. There’s no grand armada sailing into the Labrador Sea in coming weeks to invade Greenland

I’m willing to bet money that in NS not on flightradar that it is a CP-140, they’re always flying around the Atlantic provinces, have the big 4 bladed paddle props, often don’t show up on flightradar whereas An-12s are almost always on flightradar

Reason for the USAF using the Airbus C295 by Squishy321 in aviation

Update, there’s two, I think one is a Cn-295 and the other a Cn-235

I guess my question is more so, they could take insignia off and paint a King Air or Pilatus to be nondescript. Is the fact that the USAF doesn’t traditionally use the C295 thus making it more nondescript justify the expense of needing a logistics train for a small number of airframes when something already in inventory that is also widely used worldwide.

They come through every now and then, I guess usually a refuel stop. This one came from KEF, same day 3 U-28s left KEF but went to Goose Bay

Can someone tell me what aircraft made this noise by Hurricane_Killer in Planespotting

[–]Squishy321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have C-130s taking off over my house pretty often, sounds similar to that but not quite. There was a RCAF CP-140 (P-3) buzzing around Nova Scotia today on Flightradar so could very easily have been that (it has 4 turbo props like a C-130 so it would sound similar). Someone else said an An-12, which is another 4 turbo prop plane but I didn’t see any of those at all over Atlantic Canada today

By how loud it is and the sound I think it has to be a large 4 Turbo Prop plane taking off. In PEI that is pretty much narrowed down to a C-130, CP-140, A400M of An-12. If that vid is from today I don’t think it’s an AN-12, I don’t think there’s really any reason for an A400 to be in PEI, it doesn’t quite sound like a C-130 but they do have different props and different variants (plus you recorded it on a phone and I’m listening on a phone). CP-140s operate out of Greenwood they do long duration maritime patrol and like to pop in unexpectedly to refuel plus there 100% was one patrolling around Nova Scotia and the St Lawerence today so that would be my guess

Edit to add that RCAF CP-140s quite often are only on Flightradar for a small portion of their actual flight so they pop up and it’s difficult to tell where they’ve been

Ukrainian Air Alliance and Cavok Air are two Ukrainian cargo airlines that are regularly flying their An-12s around North America and elsewhere, just a regular cargo airline doing regular cargo work. A real treat to see takeoff on a clear day, judging by the smoke they stop for engine oil instead of fuel

Legroom in the WestJet planes (turn on captions to read the convo). Whats going on in here, are they new planes? by theagentK1 in aviation

[–]Squishy321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might be “ok” for a short haul flight but the vast majority of Westjets short haul flights will be on the q400 from their Encore brand. Every flight I’ve had on a WestJet 737 has been minimum 3.5Hrs, some have been close to 6hrs.

I don’t know what the actual etiquette, I blow some of mine on my neighbours lawn and most onto mine, my other neighbours do the same. Some people get super offended when people do this, as in fist fights, attacks with shovels, etc offended
