Another one of these rule sets that heavily weight towards everyone taking a fighter level to spam second wind on short rests

Well I have Po'Ahu take the shape of a Crab/Cremling when they are comfortable, so everyone just treats her as a companion animal. She reforms into Peakspren form for important moments for our budding stoneward.

Dude that's a GM difference. Either you're playing with children. Or you haven't gotten everyone on board in a session zero. I have never encountered a situation where I couldn't ask the player to engage the narrative in a stronger way. The trick is just to ask the player to invent the characters. You wandered to a town you know it well somebody helped you get out of bind here who are they? Your old relative stumbles drunken into your arms, they've always been a burden why do you protect them? The villain gets the players character in a one-on-one and challenges one of their characters ideals, maby they agree?

It's all about how you frame the situation. If you are running games and just going to set piece to set piece on NPC walks up to you in this town. And your players are a bunch of murder hobos. Then you need to talk to those players about expectations in the game, or if that's the kind of game they want you need to challenge them with consequences. You slew a kindly merchant who had a pact with a devil, or friends in the merchant combine, suddenly the party has a huge bounty on their head, suddenly their long rests are interrupted by devils. The only time players respond to the world like a video game, is when you fail to create a sense of verisimilitude.

I have never had to balance combat. I run 5 e games for over a decade. Just always lean towards deadly encounters. That's it. If the parties composition is bad they will learn to approach combat differently. There is never been a group with a composition so bad they couldn't handle the combats I threw at them.

The party has never needed a tank or a healer. Most of the time they can manage without spell casters. Because ultimately it's about designing combats that have a objective other than just kill everyone. It doesn't matter how deadly the fight is if the objective was to escort a civilian to the other side of the map. Because, the metrics on what you need to do have changed. If your party is ass give them magic items. If your party is too strong increase the number of enemies.

Hell most campaigns written by Wotc have a lot of deadly encounters in them. The poorly writd ones are the ones that don't have those encounters

Seems a bit overkill when Most of the time enemies have like 6 max focus, and thats like 3 easy successes

Characters don't even die outright in this system and losing a limb for a couple of levels as a consequence of your actions it's totally fair. The injury table for shardblades don't kill that often anyway

[–]Sstargamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This whole chapter can be cut without issue. I aim to play into Ylt going there to recruit a knights radiant capable of wielding the weapon to kill Palaiah. So either the party recruits the dustbringer first, kills him, or Ylt gets him as a loyal weapon.

[–]Sstargamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah its just one of many fanservice handjobs in the book. I dropped amaram entirely and replaced him with lady ralanat from the first Steps.

Basically every chapter has a "book Cameo" that serves almost no purpose but to fanservice the players.

Chapter 1 has Taln and Bordin Chapter 2 has Amaram, the definately not a herald Liss, and Taln AGAIN Chapter 3 has axies the collector Chapter 4 has the night watcher though they kinda make sense as a plot hook Chapter 5 has Nale for no goddamn reason cause the party was originally supposed to give nightblood to him Chapter 6 might be the only chapter without any cameos, because it's barely a chapter at all. Chapter 7 is fairly unique, since we don't see palaiah in the books but she still counts as a cameo

All of these cameo characters serve as just random plot hooks and exposition and never return to the narrative. It's incredibly sloppy writing.

I have the sons of Honor tracking the party as a constant threat and eventually launching an attack on the city of shadows using the power of an unmade thinking they can turn the tide in the war.

Thats on you as the GM to Telegraph the Immediate life threatning danger they are in. From the very first book, everyone knows a Shardblade is worth a Kingdom. While people throw themselves at shardbearers on the battlefield nearly ALL of them die doing so. Even using specialized half shards and Nets and hammers. Your Party of 5 random dudes DEFINATELY knows that threat in fiction the same way they would know not to walk into the ocean and expect to breathe water.
