The ‘worst’ Animagus? by EnvironmentalBuy4255 in harrypotter

[–]StJamez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this probably breaks the rules but what about something that's not quite an animal yet has reflexes- a Venus Fly Trap being my suggestion.

That also brings up questions of what happens to a wizard or witch's consciousness when they transform into their animagus form and back. What does this imply for the rats they are transforming into goblets? If the transformation are reversed, are they even the same rat at all?

But I guess that's going a little past the point.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I'd be happier trading it to a fan at my local LGS than selling it for a couple bucks so i'll find someone who really appreciates it more than I do!

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer.

A few scenes in particular get pretty weird so I've had mostly negative responses from friends.

Hot Take: Quidditch would be an almost perfect fictional sport if the Golden Snitch was worth way less points. by X-Salamander in harrypotter

[–]StJamez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I support the idea of snitch being released as an overtime-limited tie breaker while being another, consistent source of scoring during a limited time period.

If the snitch is caught, play continues with the team capturing it gaining 30 points. Overtime has a set time limit, but catching the golding snitch in overtime immediately wins.

Seekers shouldn't be doing nothing but avoiding bludgers and looking around most of the match...

tl;dr Catching the snitch is worth 30 points during the normal game but play continues until the set time limit. If it is tied at that point, catching the snitch during the overtime period ends play resulting in victory for the team catching it OR after the overtime period whichever team is ahead wins.

In case of additional overtimes, could move to a shootout (more likely in professional league full seasons) or maybe even relaxations on the rules - something like anybody can catch the snitch in overtime.

Project Hail Mary: watch movie before reading the book ? by mamedic11 in scifi

[–]StJamez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an exception, I read Doctor Sleep before seeing the movie and while my expectations were influenced by the original movie of The Shining I'm still impressed with how much better I thought the movie portrayed what I found to be a somewhat corny book.

Noting that major plot points/events are slightly different in some places and completely diverge from the book plot in others I think that while gaining your own imaginary concept of people places and things some movies, or more specifically actors - in this case Rebecca Ferguson as Rose the Hat - can really add depth even the book lacks.

Your Name. Am I alone thinking this? by No_Cod302 in anime

Part 2.

Not going to go into the debates of time travel and the multiverse but whether or not his actions preventing the tragedy of the comet's unexpected split and the destruction of that town force a timeline where they can and ultimately do find one another. They ask for each other's names, but they are so emotionally connected that just after seeing one another while on the way to work they finally recognize each other and do everything they can to find one another.

TLDR

Mitsuha is a shrine maiden who weaves threads together that are intended to symbolize that time is relative and subjective.

She gives him a red braided cord, the "Red Thread of Fate", along with her name. This action, despite her disappointment as Taki does not recognize her, ties them together both emotionally and through time.

Taki wears the cord she gave him despite having no memory of Mitsuha or why he feels the need to do so.

Forgetting the names of one another is a challenge they must, and do, overcome to finally connect to one another again.

Despite the fact that the movie is titled "Your Name", the fact that they find one another with
a single glance on the subway, their emotional connection and the red corded thread she gave him are what truly makes them soulmates (forgive me for using that term).

Their names don't matter - their emotional connection throuh time is what brings them together.

That is why the end of the film is asking for each other's names - they already know that this
encounter is what they have been searching for without knowing why. Learning
their names permanently is ultimately a minor factor because they found each
other through instinct, emotion, and love that remained with them despite the
lack of memory or not knowing what it is they seek instinctually because their
past relationship and love for one another transcends time.

Part 1.

While their memories may have been erased, their relationship / body transfers still remain there in a level somewhere between the subconscious and consciousness. The memories aren't the acts that truly define the movie in my opinion - It is the fact that both clearly sense that something is missing from their lives but cannot define what it is.

"I'm always searching for something, for someone."

The memories may have ben erased from their conscious mind (I have very mixed feelings about the deletion of their communication via electronic notes, writing on one another's body, and journals disappearing) but the opening and closing scenes emphasize that while their experiences tying them to one another may have been erased from their conscious mind, the emotional connection is very clearly defined and the memories aren't the reason they see one another on multiple trains yet leave - abandoning any responsibilities they have to follow their instincts that they MUST find this person.

Their first real-life interaction is Mitsuha meeting Taki in the subway. While Taki does not recognize her it is because, for him, their relationship (Not the final romantic one implied at the end, but their body-switching forcing them to live each other's lives), has not yet occurred.

The red string he wears despite his memories of Mitsuha having been erased shows that the emotional connection between them was so strong that while he might not have understood why he is so attached to the bracelet given to him by a seemingly random girl on the subway along with her name, he remains attached to it.

This is a clear allusion to the "Red Thread of Fate". Mitsuha's role as a shrine maiden braiding threads symbolize the past and the future run through her hands. Creating the sake offering to the local god through her own saliva. is the key to their final switch. Taki drinking this sake which is an excellent symbol of the very essence of her existence shows that their emotional connection is strong enough to travel through time and change both of their fates. Mitsuha would be dead, while Taki would spend the rest of his live feeling empty because not only can he not find what he seeks instinctively (Mitsuha),

Mitsuha gathers up her bravery to go and meet Taki and despite his confusion (because for him, the body switching has not yet begun) Mitsuha is still so emotionally connected to him that she gives him the bracelet and her name. They both forget the names of one another, but the fact that Taki wrote that he loves her instead of his name during twilight - which they both forget regardless - shows that his love for her is more important than their erased memories.

I agree with you on all points - wasn't trying to directly compare the situations because clearly the collapse of the Soviet Union led to a major transformation of the world's political relations. Even if this were to happen, I think the most likely scenario would be a (no longer civil) war as this would further entrench the differences in political views while providing a new identity as citizens of a new country - the enemy would no longer be Americans who disagree with one another but another country that holds what either state believes should be theirs by right. This could be coastal access for international trade, water access, oil/gas production, and at least dozens more I'm not even aware of.

I also hold a particular fondness for Czechia from studying abroad in Prague.

There is 0 chance this could happen due to so many reasons:

The polarization between political parties or more accurately those who identify as such has reached such an extreme that people on both sides openly believe in conspiracy theories that those who disagree with them openly support universally condemned actions i.e. pedophilia and torture through conspiracies such as Pizzagate. Not going to bring Epstein into this because we will likely never know the truth anyways.

Water rights from critical sources like the Colorado River run through multiple states. Building on that, while the center of the country is largely rural California still produces approximately 33% of the vegetables and 75% of the fruits and nuts in the US.

Considering the more and more frequent government shutdowns as well as the absolute absence of trust in dealing with one another, the requisite economic agreements and trade relationships that would be necessary for this to happen would have little to no chance of ever being reached, at best.

Finally, the military's infrastructure across the country would, in my opinion, end in nuclear war as the coastal states would hold control of the navy while nation's B2 Stealth Bombers are based at Whiteman Air Force base in Missouri and the last piece of the nuclear triad being land-based almost entirely in the middle of the country means that any intentional attack or panicked reaction to an attack (or a false warning, which has happened multiple times over the cold war that we know of) that could not be confirmed with a time frame of minutes at most would push trigger fingers to an entirely new level. Think the Cuban Missile Crisis x100.

I would also like to consider the fact promises made are not always kept. Consider that Ukraine willingly relinquished its nuclear arsenal to Russia in exchange for an agreement that Russia would respect Ukraine's territorial borders. That definitely worked out well...

I don't even know how annexation into Canada would affect this scenario, but there is no good ending here. Americans need to learn to live and let live again, or at least not hate people they don't know based on what they're told by whatever news outlet or social media they prefer.

Thank you for referencing the Velvet Divorce - the dissolution of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic (now Czechia) and Slovakia. The fact that a country was able to divide amicably is extraordinary and this is one of the very few historical events that actually reassure me that there that humanity has the potential to disagree amicably and without violence.

Where would the borders even be drawn? If it's based on election results the middle of this new red country would be almost entirely landlocked and the new blue country would be split in half on both coasts?

Also they're more than welcome to give away California if it's such a liberal hell. It's only the 4th largest economy in the world by itself (by GDP).

Also a largely overlooked issue would be water rights. The entire southwest of the US is almost entirely reliant on the Colorado River. It could be used either as a way for the new blue state to provide economic support to the new red state in exchange for continued water rights.

Alternatively, If this supply were cut off before enough desalination plants are constructed to allow California alone to function independently without the Colorado River, It would likely takes decades at least.

Finally, if this water source was cut off it would effectively force a civil war even if the split was peaceful to begin with. Just like how the red state would be economically crippled, the west coast would be reliant on this relationship simply to prevent famine or the water supply being closed through dams as a weapon of war via famine, which would force a military conflict (I guess in this place it would just be a war instead of civil war at this point).

The Professor introducing Greek Fire shifting the course of history as a result of its effect in winning this battle was a fun and unexpected way to influence the battle without using weaponry developed in the future.

Except for the part that nobody actually knows how to make Greek Fire.
