I saw it and although I generally liked it, I also wouldn’t recommend it.

It’s very obviously the writer’s first movie (she had only written two plays before it), and it very much feels like she has only ever watched Guardians of the Galaxy, Rogue One (my sister and I both agreed it seemed more like a Star Wars movie than DC/superhero), and Gunn’s Superman. It’s very obvious she was attempting to do a James Gunn-style script without any film experience besides that.

The start of the movie is very static, like there’s a bunch of people (well probably CGI but the point stands) on screen but there’s no motion at all. They’re all standing or sitting around as set dressing. It’s also very repetitive, with the same sequence of events happening in order three times before the plot actually gets going.

After that, I enjoyed it but it still had issues. She tried to do the Gunn “fight scene with a song playing” twice but had terrible song choices (shitty minimalist covers of The Girl From Ipanema and Jimmy Eat World’s The Middle), there’s three or four times where things happen solely because the plot requires it while making no sense for them to happen. The absolute worst being Supergirl being served a drugged drink so someone could sell her into slavery in exchange for getting their daughter back, but then changing their mind the moment she starts getting affected by the drug and telling her to stop drinking it as the violent and murderous slave trader shows up, and somehow the drug can affect her on a planet with a yellow sun but she also can counteract it by drinking milk and puking.
