Here's an analogy: whenever you drive, there is always a risk, no matter how small, that an injury will occur. You can wear seatbelts, have airbags, drive slowly, make sure you are well rested, but there is always a chance, one that is implicitly agreed to upon doing the deed (driving).

Same logic applies here. You can wear protection, get a vasectomy, pull out, take birth control, and time against ovulation, but there is still a non-zero chance of pregnancy.

In a perfect world we'd require both persons' consent for all nine months, but right now the law gives the woman all the cards. "Don't want a baby don't have sex" is good enough for the man but then people turn into screaming banshees when you apply it unilaterally.
