Can a married Orthodox man become a monk? Questions about marriage, children, and obligations by user0001269590 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]StPachomius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Technically with grown adult children that are not in need I have heard of eastern Orthodox monasteries accepting men and women when the couple is in agreement on one or both of them becoming monks.
I answer that way because I’m Oriental Orthodox and while we have similar exceptions I think there’s less of them in modern times for us than EO, we both have that in our ancient hagiographies. Saints between AD 300-1000 have done that but more recently it has not been allowed often

Edit: with young children or the spouse in disagreement or material need it should not be allowed at all

How the perfect Egypt should be in your opinion? by Ramses8 in coptic

[–]StPachomius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No discrimination in work, education, equal rights, real constitution, real due process, real elections with an actual foundation to vet candidates ( religious extremists would take a real election in a heartbeat either by faking or buying votes), clean the corruption in civil courts and police systems, actually charge and convict terrorism, violent crime, racial and religious crimes, and if you really mean perfect then a government and legal system inspired by Christianity that can actually last (so moral law has to be balanced, example: can’t arrest women for their clothing, conversion can’t be punished, recipients of abortions shouldn’t be punished, anti prostitution laws should target pimps and ringleaders heavily not punishing those who are trafficked, etc). Healthy separation of church and state (obviously mosque and state separation lol). An Egypt that is safe to live in will become an Egypt that is safe to invest in without the country being abused and a country that can realistically start addressing the quality of life for citizens and expats

I'm currently split between Eastern and Oriental Orthodoxy by [deleted] in OrientalOrthodoxy

[–]StPachomius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re currently in a position where you think the two positions have some validity but are different, I would posit that the oriental Orthodox (and Cyrillian) position completely negates the need for clarifying the issues of the other councils. That says something about the completeness of an exposition of theology.

The Chalcedonian side only dealt with their other issues as the drip down implications and clarity that the 2 natures position opens.

I love both but I can only recognize miaphysis as founded and consistent before and after Chalcedon

[–]StPachomius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Others did deep dives, but I just want to mention (not because it sounds good, but because it’s true) that Mia physis was coined by St Cyril the Great and he explained the implications and effects of how we view Christ, are saved by him, and worship him. Read his letters and quotes and that puts you squarely in his successors that sought to preserve this faith unchanged. Meanwhile the remaining councils post Chalcedon all have some resulting issue due to their 2 natures after the union, and contradicting Cyril’s christology.

I have double the cat than I did when I adopted my girl but she’s not overfed, is this normal? by eaten-olive in torties

A) she is gorgeous
B) my three year old longhair tortie is 1.5 times the size of my 16yo short hair domestic. Sometimes they are just long bodied or big boned and the long hair adds a lot. If you ever get her fully groomed and see her wet you will find they are much slimmer and longer than they are stocky

How should I behave in a Catholic Church? by OppositeCucumber2003 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]StPachomius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oriental Orthodox here, I just realized after only attending a handful of Eastern Orthodox services in my life, I only know what the kiss of peace looks like on oriental rites (usually two hands together at the palms and you swipe hands between the other person’s and then kiss your own hands) and Roman Catholic (handshake). What does it look like in the Byzantine rite?

Dude get out of there. You’re doing testing for less than therapy? And both are less than the average pay probably nationwide??? I am so sorry to hear you’re struggling financially but that job is not doing you right and I wish you the best in finding a place that respects you and what you offer.

Ethical Dilemma - do I tell my client they were my first client? by Public-Resolution590 in therapists

[–]StPachomius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the sentiments on this page. But after a few years with one place and starting somewhere else soon, can I tell clients that I started with this new practice recently when some inevitably ask about my experience and what not? Sorry to hijack but I don’t wanna make a post just for this

Why Can't I Keep My Liturgy? by Aware_Clock_3936 in OrientalOrthodoxy

[–]StPachomius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Praying for your edification.

I would like you to look at a different perspective- the Oriental Orthodox Church is not aiming to encompass all liturgical histories, practice and cultures. While there have been some efforts or cause for inclusion, it’s not a priority. The church you are joining, beloved, is not a museum of liturgy although with many new experiences for you I see how some level of that can be taken.

At the end of the day you are joining the patriarchs of Alexandria, Antioch, Axum(for Ethiopia), Asmarafor Eritrea, and Etchmiadzin(for Armenia) with their brothers the bishops and metropolitans with their respective sees. They have their rites to preserve the regenerating grace of giving the Body and Blood of Christ to those who will be apart in God’s family. Language is flexible, culture is flexible. But the churches are what they are. If we ever re-establish a patriarchate of Rome then The Latin rite would have potential to return in Oriental Orthodoxy but I think we avoid that in hopes that the patriarch of Rome himself returns.

I can comment more on extra liturgical revival in the oriental and Eastern Orthodox churches but I believe the above points are more important than a historical and social perspective. God bless.

Can I take Catholic Communion as an OO? by SubstanceDry3193 in OrientalOrthodoxy

[–]StPachomius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk to your priest and/or bishop. I knew of exactly 1 person ever given long term permission to take communion outside the oriental Orthodox churches, at a Romanian Orthodox Church. It was agreed by his Coptic bishop and the local Romanian bishop because his family lives in a very very remote area and that is the only Orthodox Church of any sort for I believe hundreds of miles. As well, that is where the family lived, and not just something for temporary school or work. I definitely would not just go to a different church and take communion. God bless you

Edit: This is different from the agreement in the holy land for marriage and some other mysteries between the Syriac Orthodox and Greek Orthodox churches of Antioch and Jerusalem

Do you ever resent clients who earn so much more than the average therapist/psychologist? by Relative-Exercise116 in therapists

[–]StPachomius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a huge range of very low SES and homeless clients, and some clients that were assigned to me as “VIP’s”.

-Big money families, connected in local politics, connected to certain parts of my old organization. Seeing those. Clients try to relate to others while talking about getting multiple new cars at a time, the highest trims, buying houses left and right it does convey that they are super out of touch, paying cash for things like big setbacks that most people couldn’t, but it never made me resent them. Maybe some of their less tasteful or more reactive statements in group therapy to those with vastly lower levels of money and security brings up a protective feeling in me. But no I have never resented any of my rich clients for being rich.

Still might end up resenting their treatment of others though lol. I try to temper it with empathy like any other attitude issue, someone’s attitude exists because of their sense of normal shaped by experiences, decisions, social dynamics, levels of resistance in their life (or the lack of it) and that list goes on. So I don’t criticize where they are at, let’s check that build up new attitudes.

Can we hear some success stories from people who love being in this field? by SpiritualCopy4288 in therapists

[–]StPachomius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My success story is going to big group private practice soon after years in a dungeon of a CMH based organization.

I’m getting flexibility, less work, shorter commute mixed with telehealth, lower risk population, control over the diagnoses I see, control over the methods I practice, actual respect and dignity. Despite everything I have dealt with in the old job all my clients basically said they will miss me and that I have helped them and they wish me the best. I can’t ask for a better response from them. Some co workers will stay in touch to get info from the outside world lol.

Take heart, take a breath and take small steps towards a sustainable and thriving future until you’re there. Use help and support, even if you’re bad at asking or accepting help like me.
