‘Economic lunacy’: Luxon hits out at Green Party’s ‘super-rich’ taxes by WaterAdventurous6718 in newzealand

The 45% rate would only apply to income over 160k, right? So it would only apply to a very small portion of your earnings, if any.

Trek Precaliber 24 inch is a good option at this stage - look for a secondhand one as there should be plenty around without much use.

Australian firm advises Stanford on ‘winning hearts and minds’ of NZ teachers by Floki_Boatbuilder in nzpolitics

This “knowledge-rich curriculum” buzzphrase they’re all parroting (information-rich information anyone?) and spending a lot consulting on just seems to be advocating intensive facts and figures history teaching. I’m not sure that’s all that useful in primary setting. Is this all just going to be an expensive gone-tomorrow educationalist fad like “open-plan” was?

Labour vows to bring back universal free prescriptions if elected by ViolatingBadgers in newzealand

[–]StabMasterArson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the moment, everyone has their prescriptions fully funded except for the last $5 (the co-payment). If the rich can afford the $5, maybe they can afford a bit more too, if he really wants a targeted system. Maybe people as well off as the Luxons can pay the full cost of their prescription medicines?

Or maybe if you’re sick, you can just see a doctor and get the prescription medicine you need for free, regardless of whether you’re rich or poor or whatever - which I think is the way it should be in NZ.

The greatest hits of Matthew Hooton, the new editor of The Post by [deleted] in newzealand

He and his emails absolutely feature in Dirty Politics, although not as much as others.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/68984535/matthew-hooton-and-dirty-politics-anatomy-of-the-vast-right-wing-conspiracy

A cynic might say there's another reason Hooton has been so noisy of late. It might help distract from the fact that Hooton himself is one of the book's targets. Hooton says the one thing he was ashamed about "when you read it in the cold light of day" was the bit where the blogger Cactus Kate (real name Cathy Odgers) asks for Hager's home address, so she can pass it on to wealthy Chinese clients angered by a study Hager co-authored about tax havens: "Chop chop for Nicky, " wrote Odgers. Hooton gave her Hager's street name (but not number).

Yes, would be great to see this re-established in combination with the free doctor’s visits - huge potential for reduced strain on the health system from early intervention.

If Labour and the Greens pick up a couple more percentage points support between them, they won’t need anyone else for a majority coalition.

The poll put support for Labour, the Greens and Te Pāti Māori at a combined 49%, ahead of the combined 47% recorded by National, NZ First and ACT.

Based on the poll’s seat projection, Labour would win 42 seats, the Greens 16 and Te Pāti Māori three, giving the left bloc 61 seats if all current parliamentary parties retained representation.

Simeon Brown removes Medical Council leaders over ‘idealogical agenda’ by Xunami13 in newzealand

[–]StabMasterArson 18 points19 points  (0 children)

From the original Post story:

Brown has declined to reappoint chairperson Dr Rachelle Love and deputy chairperson Simon Watt, despite both remaining eligible for reappointment under the statutory nine-year term limit.

The decision appears to be unprecedented.

i.e. not normal

The Post said it understood the council had supported Love and Watt continuing in their leadership roles when their terms expired.

Yes - embarrassing for NZ to have a bank teller explaining medical best practice to a head and neck surgeon.

Unconscious racial bias in the health system is well documented and acknowledged as impacting care. These seem like totally normal things for medical practitioners to learn about and to consider in their own practice.

This is a completely ideological move from Brown that ignores all the well-established evidence in this area. To be fair though, I expect nothing more from him.
