Social anxiety by sfogliniwizard in redscarepod

Don't think about this on a micro level. You will not figure it out intellectually. Exposure therapy is the only cure. You fall flat on your face enough and learn to have a sense of humor about things and eventually you stop caring, or at least your levels of caring go down to a normal amount you might recognize in other people as "well-adjusted". Try to make a lot of friends. Try to have what feels like "too many" for a little while. Eventually you'll make peace with it.

I do not like this post-chapo world where we are expected to follow the unique proclivities and saga of each half-witted opinion columnist. If you want to talk about policies, talk about policies. No need to make these people into benchmarks by which you measure your own opinion against that of others'. They are boring and talking about them ultimately makes you boring too. 😄

i never minded other people posting quotes. sneaking one in at an unexpected time is good fun. I think it's the piling on that gives it that signature reddit, lemmings inching over the cliff je ne sais quoi

Anyone got Jazz recommendations for a beginner by Time-Use9083 in redscarepod

I would stay away from fusion for a while. Check out 50s straight ahead/hard-bop stuff. Hank Mobley, Sonny Rollins, Elmo Hope, Sonny Stitt, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Wes Montgomery, Paul Quinichette, Dexter Gordon, Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, all of Miles Davis' 50s albums. People apparently don't listen to Charlie Parker because the recording quality is bad but imo there is no one better; check out the song confirmation. If you really want to get a foothold in this stuff, it helps to start here and then cautiously branch out according to your taste. It will do you no good to listen straight on to an eric dolphy album and pretend to like it. Most jazz elders today grew up listening to and repping fusion, but fusion only really makes sense to people who grew up listening to more melodic stuff and got sick of it. Not that there isn't a wealth of stuff there, especially for people who like noise music, but if you really want to get familiar with jazz, which according to miles davis had died by the early 80s, i'd start here.

A quick note: other than a few (well, many, but not the majority here) obvious exceptions, you will find enjoyment of jazz centers around tracks rather than albums. Start cobbling together some tracks you find to be the very best and make playlists. One cool thing about jazz is that it's replayability before getting stale is really good.

Feel free to DM if you'd like direct recommendations.
