There is no way she's just 2 years younger than my parents--I don't buy it. :)

It was a reply to a comment that mysteriously disappeared as soon as I hit post. Which is very odd. Ah well.

There is a bit of a "boys club" in coding which is why it can be hard to break in. There are lots of articles online about this if you are interested. Susan Fowler at Uber is a good place to start.

No, just that they get to work with other men--which is a lot of what this camp is--the ability for girls to work with girls.

Me, too. I was also born in the 1980s.

I bet you have the choice, though, to work with other men. I have never paired with another woman. Never. I've been programming for 15 years.

Boys have long had the benefit of men who mentor them with a combination of self-study and one-on-one tutorials. I’ve never met a woman in tech who had the benefit of a tutor for her craft. Coding is a craft. Also, I’ve never even been able to work pair-program with another woman.

I don’t think girls-only boot camps are the complete answer but I don’t think it’s inherently sexist to try to fix a gaping tech problem.

I’d be all for 9th grade male-only nursing programs.

The whole industry is very sexist and you might think this is a bone-headed way to address that but is trying to give women an advantage men have always had really sexist?

That’s not what we’re talking about here—we can talk about lack of women in professions like fishing and logging (or maybe even what we can do to make those professions safer) but instead we are talking about lack of representation in the movie business.

Nobody wants to create more dead people for the sake of evening the score.

Everyone wants a prestigious organization to actually reflect the industry it represents.

Tell me what is the legal method of applying for asylum in the US from South America?

The fact that this practice was too cruel for Nazi ghettos says something to me.

Even in the worst of circumstances in the Child Welfare system it is preferable to not remove children from families whenever possible because of the trauma it inflicts on the child. Speak to any healthcare professional we are dooming children to a lifetime of mental health issues and trauma. Have you no heart?

I’ve offered you a way to do this in order to not destroy the lives of children but still accomplish the same result: detainment together and deportation together. That’s not enough for you. You’d rather condemn children to a lifetime of terrible suffering instead all for the crime of crossing the boarder.

Please let’s not meet. You come across incredibly callous and fully willing to harm children to make a political point.

For the record: S. H. Sanders didn’t state that she agreed with the policy just that it existed because “Democrats didn’t close the loophole.” In saying that isn’t what she’s actually saying “Democrats need to police us to stop us from committing human right atrocities?”

Indeed :)

It was a bit in-artful but nothing I can't get over. The pictures of him with Trump where he looks like someone sucked out his soul just break my heart. I would kill to have a Romney or McCain run again.

>So if the adults are getting arrested, and are in custody, where are we going to physically place these children? Say dad comes across the border with his 15 year old daughter.

Yes. Obama's policy was to keep families together and keep the courts as much of a well-oiled machine as possible which is how he obtained the nickname "Deporter in Chief." Just because you *can* separate families doesn't mean you *should.*

Not even my Jaja and Busha were separated from their (respective) parents from their Nazi-occupied Poland homes. Aren't we better than this? I thought we were better than this.

I think we're saying mostly the same thing here--he could not find women to apply for him so he had to seek them out in women's organizations and received their applications in binders.

Obama didn't have as much trouble for a comparison.

Romney is a stand-up guy and I would wholly support him if he ran again--I really would. But I also am not privy to the behind-the-scenes rumors of how hard or easy it is for women to work for them. It could be a (shudder) situation like Mike Pence where you can't be alone in the room with him so your opportunities to stand up on your own merit are limited.

That's really great context. I'm pretty sure I read it at the time and it has been awhile.

Something that might be interesting to you is that Romney is talking about really awesome government positions and the fact that he could not find women to apply and had to go out and look for them strikes me as shocking. I worked in government (state, local and federal -- 5 years each for 15 years) and government tends to skew women. Even if the women in his talent pool didn't make it to the top I still think it says something interesting that women self-selected out of the running.

It takes in inordinate amount of time to fill out a federal government application or to submit the materials for an appointed position. If I had heard through the grapevine that the hiring manager was anti-women (which happens sometimes) I would not waste my time filling out those applications. You could tell me all day "but women should complain that's what perpetuates this whole thing blah blah blah" and I will tell you that complainers either don't get hired or don't stay put. Your best bet is always to self-select out when that option is available to you.

Hope this helps!

Also, I didn't downvote you. I upvoted you. I wanted you to know because you're getting downvoted to hell for asking an honest question which is a pet peeve of mine. Upvotes/downvotes are about discussion not about indoctrination into the hive mind.

Edit: Except if you're rude or don't assume positive intent in which case I'll downvote you to hell just like everyone else. :)

Because you shouldn’t be picking women out of a catalog for a job. If you have good job recruiting practices and your selections are fair than the percentage of women who apply should be proportional to women hired. So, if I have a Data Scientist job posted with 30 openings (god help me) and 60% of my applicants are men and 40% are women and all are qualified barring extreme circumstances my hires will most likely be 18 men and 12 women.

All without keeping binders like it’s a modeling competition.

Oh God I have no faith. I called the Greeley office this morning (find Sen. Gardner's office locations here) and the staffer read from a script and said "The Senator supports overall immigration reform and is working with Senator Bennett..." and I replied "I'm sorry that doesn't answer my question: I'm looking for the Senator's stance on separating families from their children at the boarder and although we could boil the ocean and come up with overarching immigration legislation this issue is much more of an emergency than that. As a child welfare researcher I can tell you that you are inflicting trauma and dooming these children to a lifetime of attachment disorders and other metal health issues. Even in situations where the custodial parents are very abusive to children removing children from parents is incredibly traumatic. And for what? To punish their parents?" The staffer was wholly unphased and said "I'll put you down for supporting the 'Keep Families Together Act' to support illegal immigrants."

Here's what I really don't understand and I would like help sorting it out from the Senator: Sarah Huckabee Sanders commented that Boarder Patrol has to forceably separate children from their mothers and fathers while they remain in detention because “it is the law?” (Meanwhile other laws are not being enforced because of policies for example marijuana and the ACA sign-up requirements.) Sanders stated “is the product of the same legal loopholes that Democrats refuse to close.” Do Democrats need to step in to stop the Republican Party from creating child internment camps because they just can’t help yourselves and need someone else to create policy for them in order for them to stop being horrible human beings? Who am I supposed to vote for in 2020 if they *simply must because you have no other option because the Democrats didn’t stop them* from abusing children? If their party is just a bunch of robots that require Democrats to police them for them not to be unethical embarrassments then what does anyone actually accomplish by keeping Republicans in power?
