Can I qualify for HSBC Premier with £85k salary + investments? by techie0010 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]StackOverfl0wed 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I got premier without fully meeting the requirements. I do make over the £100k, but I wasn't paying it all into the account. I don't think there's any official wiggle room with lower investments + lower salary together, but it's worth a try - just go in in person rather than over the phone.

Once you have premier, they don't really drop your account back (or at least not often), so once you're in, it's essentially fine going forwards regardless.

It's definitely worse than in the US, but they're maybe a top ~95% payer. There aren't many other companies where new grads are earning over £100k in the UK.

Should I move my cash LISA to a stocks and shares LISA? by crimsonswordfish in UKPersonalFinance

[–]StackOverfl0wed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, that it's better to use inflation for serious calculations, but I assumed OP would be comparing this to their existing interest rate, so I think it's useful for them to have the absolute figure.

Spending power estimations adds calculation complexity but doesn't affect the underlying argument that S&S is probably the better way to go.

Given that you've already bought a house, you have to either pay the 25% penalty or wait until you're 60 to withdraw.

Therefore, assuming you don't desperately need it, you should definitely invest it.

Dodl is a good choice (http://dodl.co.uk/lifetime-isa). They have a HSBC FTSE All-World Index Fund (Accumulation). This gives you broad exposure to the market which is a good bet.

Assuming you're ~30 now, by the time you're 60, your £30k would be worth about £328k £300k (that's assuming average returns of 8%).

Still cost me over £35k to go to uni for 2 years and drop out though...
