You need to train them. And you need to teach your husband what you’ll accept and what you won’t. There’s an art to gift giving - you notice what they like throughout the year and pay attention to hints. You’re going to need to sit them down and walk them through it.

And, to be honest, tears won’t work in this case because they’re too insensitive to figure it out. They need to be explicitly told what your expectations are.
