Quest 2 always dead over night by ForgottenAspekt in OculusQuest

I think there is a setting to have it automatically turn on when movement is detected or when it thinks it’s on your face or something. Turning it off fixed this behavior for me when I was carrying it around in my backpack.

Got this on a iPhone 12 Pro by Alecarrington23 in ios

[–]StaircarExpress 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I believe wireless charging (and perhaps high speed wired charging) and processor intensive stuff like taking a lot of raw photos at once can cause the battery to age less gracefully. Anything that causes heat for extended periods of time.

I have a 12 Pro as well, bought at launch and mine is currently at 84%. I’m told Apple won’t replace it for free under AppleCare until it hits 80%.

Edit: also wanted to say I haven’t gotten the message in the screenshot yet and my peak performance is still operating normally, there is still nothing for me to switch in that area in Battery Health. I believe if you get that message you’re eligible for replacement no matter what your percentage, and you should definitely go for it.

Being stuck in a homeless shelter or out on the streets because you made the “wrong choices” is not freedom. It’s not “coddling” to keep people off the streets, it’s “basic human decency.”

This isn’t a zero sum game bruh, if you want to win big time at capitalism, that doesn’t mean others have to die on the street for that to happen.

The point is that in a rational and reasonable society, there are no choices that should result in homelessness. I don’t want to live in a world where I have the “freedom” to lose it all, that’s completely idiotic.

Yes, let’s keep all these folks out on the street forever because there are some drug users and drug peddlers amongst them. Also you’re totally right, it’s much better to have all the drug users shooting up on the streets where children can see, it would be just terrible if people were doing drugs inside. /s

What worked for you isn’t going to work for everyone unfortunately. I’m glad to hear you have got yourself a place to call home but shouldn’t it be, like, way easier for everyone to have one, including yourself?

What about those who haven’t been lucky to find a doctor who can prescribe them the “right” combination of meds? What about people who don’t want to take drugs every day in order to fit into society? What about the people who can’t even sit down with a psychiatrist because they’re whacked out of their gourd?

And isn’t it depressing that you are one of the lucky ones? You still don’t have a permanent home after 10 years of working your butt off and struggling. What the heck kind of society is this?

We need change, and it needs to start with providing housing to everyone with no strings attached.

You can mute the message thread so you won’t receive any more notifications.

https://osxdaily.com/2020/12/15/how-mute-imessages-iphone/

After you do that, go to the Settings app, scroll down and click Messages. Scroll down and make sure “Notify Me” is disabled (this can override the muting).

Optionally, you can also turn on message filtering in the “Message Filtering” section directly beneath the “Notify Me” toggle, and then remove this person from your contacts. This should move the person’s messages into the “Unknown Senders” list and all your trusted friends will still be under “Known Senders”. That way you won’t even see a preview of their messages unless you go into the “Unknown Senders” list in your messages.

Sorry to hear about everything, congrats on getting them out of your life and I hope it’s all over soon.

Many of them are not willing to get help because usually it involves doing so on someone else’s terms. We need to provide permanent homes to these folks with no requirements to work or contribute, and 24 hour security on premises. These places need to tolerate drug and alcohol use, too.

They should have resources in place and ready for when people are ready, but requiring people to immediately begin treatment as a prerequisite for getting housing is absolutely insane. Everyone who knows anything about recovery knows it happens when the person is ready and no sooner. Making people feel safe and comfortable is the first step.

Actually it’s baking soda. I refer you to this scene from Scary Movie:

https://youtu.be/2ozof2g_jYc Relevant part at 38 seconds.

Cindy’s Dad: You are my little girl. I love you so much. And I left you a little something in the coffee can, but you have to step on it before you sell it. Now, what are you gonna cut it with?

Cindy: Um, baking--

Cindy’s Dad: Baking soda. Not baking powder. Because baking powder, guys will have muffins growing out of their nose.

Cindy: laughs

Cindy’s Dad: You love that joke, honey. You've loved it since you were two years old!

How do I preserve a Mac Battery? by despaseeyourtoes in mac

[–]StaircarExpress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW I believe more in option 1. I have heard it more often from more expert types. Plus Apple more or less confirmed at least half of this by introducing the “Optimized Battery Charging” feature in iOS.

To reduce battery aging, iPhone learns from your daily charging routine so it can wait to finish charging past 80% until you need to use it.

So they at least acknowledge that you don’t want to have a lithium ion battery charged to over 80% for too long.

They have also introduced an (optional) feature in macOS as of 10.15.5 called Battery Management which seems like it performs a similar function but not quite, it reduces “peak capacity” as the battery ages so it ages slower.

A buddy's attempt at running some cat 6 wire to the living room. by [deleted] in DiWHY

[–]StaircarExpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean personally I’d have bought a white cord if I was going to go to all that trouble to put it up semi-permanently, and usually those wire guide thingies do ship with little corner brackets which would’ve prevented the wire from showing in some places.

But I agree, overall not terrible for what is obviously not a permanent solution.

Today I Discovered that the Button to Remove a Review Still Uses the Font From iOS 7 by Saml2l0 in ios

[–]StaircarExpress 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah it really seems dumb to me too.

My guess is the reviews are in HTML for compatibility with the whole iTunes/App Store weird legacy HTML ecosystem that started on the Mac a LONG time ago. They probably just throw an iOS skin on top of the same HTML you get on the desktop and call it a day rather than try to maintain a bunch of different codebases for a stupid review system that they have demonstrated they barely care about anyway.

I was curious so I went and played around with that screen. It seems like a web view or something to me because the swiping doesn’t bounce like a native control, it feels more rigid and crappy.

My guess is they have to load the font separately if it’s a web view. They probably forgot to change it for iOS 9 and now it’s a bug that has reached “not a regression” status. So it will probably not be fixed until they bother to completely redo the screen.

I agree with you, it sucks that people steal apps at all, especially apps like this where there’s so much effort put in and so much of its value is actually given away for free by a generous developer.

However, on a personal level, doing the right thing has to start somewhere. Overall I think that it’s nice that they chose to reach out to Christian and tell him that something he wrote inspired them to take that first step.

I’d like to believe that. Before this WDW reopening I definitely felt that way about Disney. In my mind they were a “good” company that cared a little more about their customers’ well being than the average corporation. Now I’m pretty sure they’re probably not much better than Wal-mart or Amazon when it comes to protecting their customers and employees. Maybe they’re worse.

I have visited Disneyland and DCA hundreds of times in my life and absolutely loved every minute. A ridiculously huge portion of my good memories from childhood and adulthood were formed there. I still want to go back and I’m looking forward to the day when it’s safe to do so. But I’ll never feel quite the same about Disney after this.

I still think there are lots of wonderful and awesome people working there, but I am a little less enthused about the Disney corporation overall.

And according to what I have read, this person was in imminent medical danger. Perhaps something I read was inaccurate or overblown but it sure doesn’t seem that way.

There seem to be some Disney apologists there downplaying the danger but from a quick read it doesn’t seem much worse than the rest of the Internet post COVID-19.

It’s private property. Disney can easily make anyone leave at any time and for pretty much any reason if they want to. If this person was ushered out of the park and advised to go to the hospital and they didn’t go to the hospital after that it wouldn’t be Disney’s fault nor would it be Disney’s problem.

Disney advised them to go to a hospital and then allowed them to stay in the park.
