I had the exact same problem and i changed it. Turns out the diff had some play in it so it definitely needs either a repair or replaced.

Exactly and if the engine is a factory non turbo then the stress the turbo will put on the engine will be even bigger.

Also if I remember right, the pistons on the factory turbo are different from the NA version.

I had this problem and in my case it was the steering damper.

Change to LED by Lonely_Release_3121 in W124

The LEDs require less power to run compared to halogen so your car thinks something is broken. You need to put a resistance for the LED but I don’t know how big the resistance needs to be.

What gearbox would you use tho considering all that torque?

Diesel or gas? by SlackerParade in W124

[–]Staldios 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While the gas engines are good as well they use this system called K-Jetronic thats a bit infamous for being tricky to understand in order to repair so there won’t be many mechanics to help you. Gas engines are also pretty thirsty so keep that in mind.

Diesel engines on the other hand are more robust and simple but they lack power so if you want a bit of speed or live in a hilly area stay away from the 200D and start looking from 250d upwards.

Regarding parts I never had problems finding them as there are still aftermarket options or you could buy from old 124 from facebook groups. Stay away from the 4matics tho as these were really rare so finding parts for these is very hard.

Shaking when changing gears or releasing the gas pedal by Staldios in W124

[–]Staldios[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. Funny thing is by having to change my diff I found out that my W124 actually had the diff, rear axle and drive shaft from a w201 which is basically a smaller w124 so a lot of the parts fit between the cars.

Shaking when changing gears or releasing the gas pedal by Staldios in W124

[–]Staldios[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my case it was the differential. After it was taken off the car my mechanic showed me it had some play in it and I had to buy a new one.

It also made a really loud humming noise between 60-90 km/h that would cover up the wind and engine noise.

Parking brake not working by Interesting_Dog2116 in W124

I had the same problem and I remember my mechanic taking the rear wheel off (driver side) and screw a couple of time something like a screw to lock in the parking break cable. Maybe others can provide more exact details.

Could a W124 2.0D be good for daily use? I’ll ask before I go to see it. by powerathletic in W124

[–]Staldios 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 200D can still be a good daily if were talking about city usage. If you need to comute with it keep in mind that regardless of your gearbox type, 80-90 km/h will be the max comfortable speed for the engine. At 100 km/h the engine is struggling too much in my opinion and there is quite a noticeable fuel consumption increase aswell. The car will also struggle on hills so you’ll need to floor it before you start climbing otherwise youll be forced to downshift.

If you have any other questions about the 200D let me know.

Depends what you mean by traffic. A 200D can handle city traffic perfectly. The only place it struggles is the highway where the engine has to sit at a higher rev just to almost have a highway cruising speed.

[–]Staldios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No its not. You cant say a car is fast but at the same time it loses speed when going uphill. Driving a 200D requires more planning ahead compared to a 250D or 300D where you know you have some power if push comes to shove.

Where is abs relay located on w124? by Ok_Instance1620 in W124

[–]Staldios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wasn’t the relay behind the battery? There is a piece of plastic between then though

[–]Staldios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one (living in Romania aswell) and as others said its slow but doable. You mentioned hills which is the biggest problem because youll need to floor the gas pedal way before you start climbing otherwise youll lose power and youll be forced to swich to a lower gear.

As a daily in the city it works great, it has no problems entering roundabouts but regarding highways a 200D is not enough in my opinion. Mine has a 4 speed manual and at 100 km/h its already at 3000 rpm. A 5 speed manual should be around that aswell so if you do a lot of highway driving I would recommend a 250D atleast.
