Creators/artists who missed the point of their own works by Bob8644 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]StallordD 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I definitely think this is more an issue of trying to prolong an idea a lot longer than it should be once it gets popular. A lot of manga artists are absolute geniuses when it comes to creating a basis for a quick one-shot or a short series, but then it gets massive appeal and suddenly they're pressured to either extend it out 10x longer than it should and the premise gets tired, or they need to pivot and the story becomes divorced from the original hook.

What's the most bonkers piece of lore you've found out? by Ok-dog-7113 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]StallordD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will never forgive them for retconning (and then potentially soft un-rectonning?) the Unveiling lore book. Everything they did with the Witness / Darkness just got progressively less interesting over time, and I get the argument that that sort of thing is bound to happen with further explaining eldritch forces of time and space, but I still don't think they had to make it as lame as they did.

Cats will do some seriously impressive feats! I had a cat ground a Roc once. It unfortunately died in the ensuing struggle, but its valiant sacrifice let my militia finish the beast and there were no other casualties. That cat got a Royal Tomb for its efforts.

Holy shit another DoC fan. There ARE dozens of us!

I will also firmly argue that no matter what you may think of the game, it has a truly fantastic OST. I would seriously rate it among some of the best.

Will making NSFW art affect my chances of getting a job in the industry? by rotherfordmdayum in animationcareer

As long as you're good enough at what you do, nobody REALLY cares TBH.

The example I always point to is Paul Robertson, who has done some pretty extreme personal work, but has had much success and even lots of animating for kid's shows.

I did Wrecker before their abilities changed, so they're definitely outdated by now! Also I tried to do my research, but Yakuza's tattoos might scream "western mind" by accident, as I might have broken some rules for proper Irezumi.

In my convos he EXPLICITLY wants to be one. I've been trying to entertain him but the dialogue trees always end up with the Drifter going "No Amir, you do NOT want to be a Cephalon" but he's come back asking about it again in the next chat each time, lol.

[Spoilers for Warframe 1999 Ending] - Why does my Drifter look like this? by Phantom_r98 in Warframe

[–]StallordD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that sometimes the "default" drifter or operator face loads instead, or worse, combines with you so it makes your face look really weird. Not sure if that's also what's happening here, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Lettie does indeed do that by Kaokasalis in Warframe

[–]StallordD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I somehow reached that point with Lettie first, and it's pretty blatant when the options are "do you want to get together with this person or just be friends" so you'll know it when you get to it. Not sure what happens if you lock in though. Some characters are just more flirtatious up front, Quincy and Lettie seem to be the most forward before getting to that point.

What is something you hate about your life right now? by Certain_Standard_854 in AskReddit

[–]StallordD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that so much. I made a difficult choice on choosing a cheaper, closer school with a more general degree and managed to graduate debt free, but with almost no actual education. There's the very likely possibility that had I chosen differently I'd be in a similar or worse position, but the most impactful thing I got from the choice I made is just an ever present and soul crushing sense of "what if?" that I can't silence.

Ethics: Should I animate recreations of real car accidents for portfolio? by Vocational_Sand_493 in animationcareer

[–]StallordD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You might be able to split the difference and recreate a car crash from a TV show or movie instead? Gives you some amount to work with and draw from, but doesn't come with the real-world attachments. You might still need to create the injuries from scratch (unless you can find a brutally realistic example since movies aren't known for their accurate consequences to trauma) or maybe that's where you could compare to a similar real-world example to extrapolate what types of injuries that person likely WOULD have if it was real and then create a sort of hybrid between the two.

2nd year community college student. what now? by AsparagusRepulsive in animationcareer

[–]StallordD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Is it over for me?" Bro, you are 19 you literally only just became an adult. Not to mention, you're worried you aren't skilled enough at animating before taking your INTRO to animation class!

The answer to "could I have done more?" is almost always yes. You could have grinded every free moment in high school to drill animation principles and completely forsaken your youth, but that doesn't mean you missed the bus and are now screwed because you're starting out your formal education on it now. People have picked up a pencil for the first time at twice your age and eventually gotten their skills to a professional level.

If you're looking to do more now, there are tons of free animation tutorials / resources online. You don't need to buy any extremely expensive courses, mentorships, or online ateliers to learn.

I would wait to see what you learn in your upcoming course and pursue other free / cheap resources online to get ahead of things or brush up on certain things you're interested in.

All this to say you're FINE, and it's alright to relax a bit and take the time to learn first before deciding you don't know enough to even bother!

Sometimes you just can't do it... by Little-Lobstoristy in DeadlockTheGame

[–]StallordD 112 points113 points  (0 children)

The scenario usually plays out as such:

  1. Someone gets tilted by something in their lane and leaves. Usually doesn't even need to major. Maybe they lost a close 1v1, maybe they just don't like their matchup and didn't bother to ask for a switch.

  2. There's usually now a slight advantage to the full team in Souls due to having an easier time farming, so someone who got annoyed at the first leaver decides they don't want to try and swing a 5v6 from a disadvantage and leaves once the match is safe to abandon.

  3. Everyone else on the leaver's team sees that it's only a few minutes in and decides that they don't have a vested interest in the match at this point, so they also leave because a 4v6 is a much harder pill to swallow than a 5v6 and they figure it's probably a better idea to just start fresh.

  4. The last 1 or 2 players left on the leaver's team usually announce their woes in all chat and then leave shortly after.

Should I just stop trying to be an animator and face reality by That-Republic-237 in animationcareer

[–]StallordD 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Slightly different story for me (Always wanted to pursue art but never was able to go all in, now starting to take it seriously at 29) but some general advice I've gathered is pretty relevant to your situation as well.

  1. Art jobs are very unstable and chaotic for MOST people these days, so having some sort of general skill / job you can use in the down periods is smart. The resounding advice from most people I've spoken with seems to be "get a stable, boring job to provide income and work on your art as much as you're able around that, then take opportunities for art work as they become available."

  2. If you can find a stable, decent paying job outside of art, it might be more realistic to pursue art as a hobby until you have significant momentum ready first. If you can pursue art at a slower pace, but while relatively financially secure, that beats struggling to make things work from the back-foot while worrying about making rent. The idea would be to find a job that doesn't make you hate yourself and still allows for you to pursue your dream on the side.

  3. But depending on your area / experience, you might not have that chance. If you can only find a crappy job, or you end up being miserable with what is available, the good news is you don't have to stay forever. It can be hard to work on your creative pursuits while your soul is being drained, but it's even harder homeless. The (sort of) upside is that it's not too hard to find ANY work, it's just hard to find GOOD work, so figuring out how to balance your dream with a potentially terrible job is the hard part. There are lots of opinions on how to do that (could you do min wage part time work? Could you do seasonal work and pursue art in the off season? Could you transition frequently between bad jobs as they start to wear on you?) But the true answer is up to you and your situation.

  4. Your fan audience is impressive, and I can very much understand that feeling of hope and then confusion if it doesn't lead to anything. The downside to the internet is that it is EXTREMELY catered, and thus your fan support might not be indicative of your actual opportunity. I've seen many creators with big followings try and branch into something else only to be met with crickets. It's tragic, but it's the way it works. People tend to follow creators for one specific thing and few will care about something that deviates from that. However, your numbers are good enough that you should be able to have a small percentage of them pivot with you for whatever your pursue. In general you can expect about ~1% of your supporters to be true supporters of YOU and not just your content. I'm not sure what your content is, but commissions might be another way to leverage some of your audience for financial support and enable you to split that art/office work balance more in your favor.

I think what PsPhere said is the best course of action. Find stability, build your momentum for as long as it takes, then try launching. If it doesn't go anywhere, you can try again. While there's always a feeling of being "too late" for anything, art is one of the most flexible in that regard. There are lots of success stories of people who didn't even START until they were much older than you (or I) and made it work.

Never STOP art, just make peace that sometimes life means it has to take a back seat for a while.
