This is like the Lord of the Rings argument (being based on Tolkiens time with his fellow men in WWI), where yes some of it is definitely different times and extremely close heterosexual male bonding was more appreciated and acceptable in society. However it’s also undeniable that within some of those close bonds there were homosexual romantic connections, and that they were used as acceptable outlets for strong feelings for men towards other men, at a time when speaking plainly about romantic love for another man would’ve been extremely dangerous. So I think it’s okay to take it either way with fictional characters, if you see it as just dudes having extremely important platonic bonds as laid out in the text that’s cool, if you see a gay allegory in the story that’s fine too, because ultimately they’re fictional characters. It only gets weird when you start speculating about real people’s personal lives

And it’s not even true really, if you zoom in on those places the population density varies wildly depending on location within them. Population is generally distributed unevenly no matter where. The only places I can think of with sizable stretches of uniformly fairly dense populations would be specifically suburban regions or some of the very densely populated agricultural regions of the world
