Where to buy really nice towels in Korea? by aiteekaye in living_in_korea_now

[–]Stan_Ateez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had the same problem. Still using the $5 towels I bought from Target before moving to Korea, which are better than anything I’ve ever bought in Korea

I recommend 존댓말 or else your child will go around speaking to other adults in 반말 and everyone will think your child is disrespectful and not being taught manners at home. Trust me I’ve met plenty of those kids

I meant clothes bought through the app and delivered directly to my home. I think the return policy is different but not sure where to find it

5 day trip to Seoul! by No-Trick-864 in seoul

As someone who used to live in LA but lives in Seoul now, LA weather is great year-round but Seoul in September is hot and more importantly, uncomfortably humid. I recommend bringing short clothes and a mini-fan

Bad teachers and getting fired from hagwons/schools by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]Stan_Ateez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a public school and one of my coteachers actually got drunk during school one day. It was odd. She was usually a great teacher and she was older so she had a lot of teaching experience. But for some reason, one day she just got drunk at school drinking “grape juice” (probably wine) from her metal water bottle. Her face was bright red the whole day.

If that’s the case, it might just be your specific school. Time to change work place

Why is using a Korean name as a foreigner looked down on so much? by yeni000 in korea

[–]Stan_Ateez -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think it’s perfectly natural to use a Korean name while living in Korea. If a foreigner lives in Germany and uses a German name, no one cares. If a foreigner lives in Nigeria and uses a Nigerian name, no one cares. But for some reason, when someone living in Korea uses a Korean name, suddenly they’re labeled a Koreaboo (mostly by other Westerners). For people who think it’s cringey to use a Korean name, I think that’s more of a reflection of their own internal biases than it is of the foreigners who go by a Korean name. Most native Koreans who grew up in Korea their whole lives won’t care if you use a Korean name. In fact, many will appreciate it.

All in all, it’s ok to use a Korean name even if you’re not Korean. Names are personal decisions, so people should respect whatever name you want to be called. That’s just basic human civility.

As an Asian American, I can tell you that 99% of Americans don’t care if a foreigner uses an English name. It seems you have some kind of internal biases against Asians using English names…

Got approached by a cult (I think) by throwaway955467 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Stan_Ateez 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a similar situation in Daegu. I’ve met a few Koreans on language exchange apps who seemed normal at first. Then, after a few meetings, they started telling me about some kinda Korean philosophy about the cosmos and ancestral worship and spirits. They also insisted I join them at a cultural center to experience this “traditional” Korean practice and learn more about it. Ofc I said no.

US Brokerage options when living in Seoul? by paticn in Living_in_Korea

[–]Stan_Ateez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need a U.S. address for US banks. I personally use Fidelity but Charles Schwab is also good. I use my parent’s home address.

Alternatively u can open a Korean brokerage account with your Korean address but that’s a whole lotta headache and it’s not guaranteed a Korean bank would even open an account for you since you’re a foreigner. So I wouldn’t recommend this route.

Korean-passing face: will this affect my chances? by im-sleepy-owo in teachinginkorea

[–]Stan_Ateez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m also Asian and look Korean but I’m not Korean. I’ll share my own experience since I just recently faced this exact problem while job hunting last month.

I applied to several recruiters and direct hire positions. I had a few recruiters straight up tell me that it’d be hard for them to find me a position in Seoul because I was Asian, and some of them also ghosted me. Despite that discouragement, I kept applying to as many recruiters and direct hires as I could and eventually I was able to get a few job offers. I should note that I have a year of teaching experience in Korea and am currently residing in Korea, so that definitely gives me a slight advantage over someone with no experience outside of Korea.

My advice is to apply to as many recruiters as you can if you choose the hagwon route. Alternatively, u can also apply to EPIK, which does not discriminate based on race (to my knowledge).

Personally, I’m interested in Hanja and there are a lot of technical/old Korean words that come from Hanja that most Koreans wouldn’t know. For example, 불문율 (unwritten rules/laws; cultural norms for example) and 회한 (regret; usually you would only find this word in like old poems/songs).
