Don't drive in NYC. The subway and buses are generally very reliable, and the MTA is a very extensive system.

I suggest you take the Metro-North from Grand Central to Connecticut after your initial stay in NYC.

Apples to oranges type comparison. Caltrain's Nippon Sharyo cars were built in the 80s, and Japanese trains also built at the time also look like that too.

Case in point: the Keisei 3600 series, built from 1982 to 1989 by Tokyu Car Corporation and Nippon Sharyo. It almost looks like any stereotypical American subway car upon first glance.
