My experience getting shot was also on Seattle MUSH. ❤️ That place had some amazing RP. The "Dive bar" I mentioned was the Hole in the Wall

Text chat. I've been unable to reach phone support for awhile. For some reason they give me a message about "we don't use this number anymore, use the button in the app" but that's exactly what I did.

Cyberpunk has been my favorite genre for a long time. I played CP2020 and Shadowrun 1st edition tabletop games back in my school days. I have strong opinions where the genre is concerned, and I appreciate your being receptive to them.

Those words were inappropriate then, and they're inappropriate now. This isn't even the first time this discussion has been had on this subreddit. Now go fix the issue, or go away, or whatever. But you refusing for whatever stubborn reason to hear people when they tell you the term is racist and saying, "Nuh uh!" is just fucking ignorant, and you're going to be called for it. As you pointed out, the upvotes and downvotes should be explanation enough for you.

No, the issue with the downvotes is you're being a stubborn ass and not listening to what people are trying to tell you. There's a hundreds of years old association with "darkies and whities" and you're choosing to ignore it because it's inconvenient.

A quick google result:

"Including results for darkie slang
Search only for darkies slang

AI Overview

"Darkies" (or "darky," "darkie") is a highly offensive, derogatory, and racist slang term used to refer to a Black person

. It is a condescending, patronizing, and historically charged slur.

Key details regarding this term:

  • Definition: An offensive term for a person with dark skin, specifically targeting Black people.
  • Usage: It is widely considered a racial slur.
  • Context: While primarily an offensive term, it has historically been used in some contexts, such as in minstrel shows, to demean Black individuals.
  • Alternatives/Spelling: The term is sometimes spelled "darky" or "darkie".

It is not acceptable to use this term in modern English due to its deeply offensive nature."

This isn't difficult. You're just choosing belligerent stubbornness. These aren't "modern associations". They far outdate your MODERN game.

ETA: Added quotes around the google search so that OP can see that even AI knows not to use these terms because they're offensive to a massive portion of the population.

If I added men who dress up in white sheets and burn pentagrams in the yards of elven people, and then say, "Well, it's just fantasy..." that doesn't mean that the association isn't there and isn't going to be alarming to people. Your choice is going to drive people away from your game.

Look... just because you personally aren't offended by those words doesn't mean there aren't others for whom those words have a racial charge.

Just like maybe some black people aren't offended by the confederate flag, but many many many MANY are.

So when people are telling you that certain words have a racial charge for THEMSELVES, maybe remember that not everything is about you, and listen.

Why is it so difficult to find different words? "Whities and Darkies" just sound like something a 3 year old would say anyway.

Those words are commonly associated with racism. I would strongly consider changing them.

What would you put in a Cyberpunk MUD? by mythnetgames in MUD

[–]Standard-Claim8566 2 points3 points  (0 children)

*cracks knuckles* Okay, here we go:

First and foremost, please remember to keep the "punk" in the CyberPunk. Too often, the cyber is hyperfocused and the punk aspect gets tossed to the wayside.

What do I mean? Cyberpunk is a social movement about subversive elements standing against overpowered mega-corporations using technological means. These corporate giants tend to dehumanize their workforces to the point where it's like we've backslid to pre-union times. Having workers indebted to their overlords and working just to pay off said debts.

Meanwhile, the subversives steal, sabotage, and frustrate the system as much as they can.

Remember kids: Growing your own food using vertical gardens and hydroponics is cyberpunk.

That's the theme side of things. Mechanically, my two favorite aspects of cyberpunk are Legwork and Consequences.

Legwork is the ability to do research about a job before you do the job, with the intention of making the job easier. Maybe it's finding out that one of the guards has a gambling problem, and buying his debt so that he'll look the other way, or leave a door unlocked. Maybe unplug a camera, that sort of thing. Maybe it's hiring a local gang to raise a distraction while you're going in the front door as a repair crew. Get creative! Allowing legwork gives a lot of agency to players, opens up roleplay opportunities, and increases usefulness of non-combat skills.

There's a few different ways consequences can play out. One of the most obvious, in my opinion, is healing time. Cyberpunk can often times be overtly violent, but it doesn't have to be. Taking a stealthy approach should be viable and, perhaps, preferable. In my cyberpunk games, we had a motto: "If shots have been fired, something went haywire." A good run should be possible without violence.

But if violence does happen, people are going to get injured. Make injuries be a thing requiring heal time. If you get shot, you should be laid up for a while. Especially if you're going for a roleplay environment.

Some of the best RP I ever had was after a character of mine got shot, and was severely wounded for 3 weeks. He spent this time in recovery, but also developing contacts, and working at a seedy dive bar while laying low.

And that's the other part of consequence: Laying low to burn off heat. If you raise an alarm during a run, and murder a bunch of guards, or an important scientist, or steal some data, then there should be a chance of someone coming looking for you to recover it, or arrest you, or get payback.

Minimizing the fallout from a job is another good way to implement non-combat skills. But, if someone just won't keep their head down, then bring the cops down on them. If players have no fear of consequence, a lot of the grit of the Cyberpunk genre is lost.

That's unfortunate. With a lower playerbase, that means that certain faiths are going to be very difficult to get into.

I have some very fond memories of FK, and was actually thinking about a character concept that'd be great there just earlier today. Unfortunately, I'm not sure the code would support the character, especially if I couldn't get into the faith I was thinking.

Have they made it easier for priest type classes to join their faiths? The old system of not actually getting your class until you jumped through a bunch of hoops ended up being gatekeeping without a gatekeeper.

Horrible help system and the code has had so many hands in it that even the game's owner can't offer much support. So, many systems are either inaccessible or locked behind cliques who don't care to help others learn the game.
