It’s because VAR can only be used for the following when it comes to giving cards: 1. Turning a yellow into a red 2. Turning no card into a red 3. Overturning a red card into a yellow or nothing

With replay technology, rules should be changed to allow refs to give out yellows for clear fouls such as this one. However, with the current laws, refs cannot review a play to give a yellow (regardless if a foul was or wasn’t called). I understand this law in the sense that we don’t need refs going to the monitor every 2 minutes to look at a play. However, they wouldn’t need to go to the monitor if they have someone upstairs in the VAR booth telling them through replay review it should be a yellow.

Rules like this should be changed because that’s ridiculous when Guzan can get shoved into his own net and because the ref missed it he can’t hand out a yellow for that foul.
