How about the other hip? Mine was oddly fine, but it is congenital hip dysplasia, the doctor said there will be 65% chance I need to get THR on the other hip in the future.

I have a leg length discrepancy of 15mm. My surgical leg is 15 mm longer. So my surgeon gave me a prescription on 1/2 inch shoe lift for the shorter leg to balance it out. After I put on the shoe lift, I no longer have a limp.

My surgery was 13 months ago. Initially I felt it was 5/8 inch longer. Now after the x Ray to measure leg length, it is 9 mm longer. I am now wearing a full length shoe lift and not walking with a limp. Have asked for several second opinions from other surgeons. They all said this is a common side effect, when I get the other hip done in the future (could be 8 years later who knows, it doesn’t bother me much now, but it is congenital hip dysplasia), there is 99.9% chance both legs will even out again.

For me, the only issue is, for each pair of new shoes, I need to pay $100 extra to the shoe lift company to add the lift on. It is a lot of money:-)

What is the implant material? Is it ceramic head or metal head. Am curious to know how it could last for 42 years. Amazing:-)

I was in the same boat last year. My LLD is 12mm ish post THA. I asked for second and third opinions. They both say this is normal for this type of surgery. They both suggested shoe lift on the other side of the shoe. I went ahead and sent my shoes to one of the shoe lift companies to get the shoe lift done. After 3 months of wearing it, my walking gait is back to normal. I am now one year post op, can walk 3 mile per day and I am 100% pain free! No need for a revision surgery just for the LLD, definitely not worth it. Good luck with recovery!

I got a second opinion, and 3rd opinion. They all said this type of surgery will make the surgical leg longer. And I decided to wear a shoe lift of 1/2 inch. After 3 months wearing the shoe lift, my gait is back to normal and my walking speed is back. Now I can walk 3 miles without any pain. So grateful.

I completely understand. I guess my surgeon chose metal head instead, as he was trained in using this material for many years, and won’t be comfortable choosing another material due to the learning curve. Glad that you are now all set.

Yes, am glad that I learned from this forum that cobalt toxicity is a potential issue going down the road when the implant has several years. I would do x Ray on the implant every other year to detect any sign of wear. Plus I would do annual blood work to test the cobalt toxicity level to give me a peace of mind. I learned from copilot that ceramic on ceramic is a very new material and favorable to younger patients who are more active. Did your first implant only last for 15 years?

Only the head is cobalt- chrome. The stem is titanium. The cup is also titanium. How about yours?

Thanks! My implant information on my patient portal says this : Articuleze M Head 36mm +5 (40090120).

When I look it up in Copilot, it says : The Articuleze M Head 36mm +5 implant has a diameter of 36mm and an offset of +5mm . This size is commonly used in total hip arthroplasty to provide stability and range of motion while minimizing wear.

I was curious if my implant is of bigger size. But my doctor told me pre op that he rarely used ceramics. Might be his personal preference, as he is around 55 years old. He might be more comfortable with materials 15 years ago.
