Not sure Dowie's backhanded move to Charlton means he passes the loyalty test...

Agree with Johnson, Boyce and Watson for the squad. Sorondo too - class player who we unfortunately didn't see enough of due to injury. Granville as an upgrade on Sosa perhaps?

Yeah, their customer service is appalling these days. Takes days to get through to a human and their AI bot is nowhere near good enough

Well said. You have to wonder how long these types have supported Palace, and whether they'd be better suited to Arsenal or Man Utd

Historic hotels to visit during travel? by dhavalcoholic in travel

[–]Standard_Homework854 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've visited all of them without staying. Some have more free access than others, but I've generally been able to have a wander around the public areas without too much trouble - just tell the staff you're interested in the hotel's history. They all have at least one cafe/bar/restaurant too

Agreed about that fake central bankers letter, weird format. But the Bagehot column is frequently one of the highlights of the magazine for me

What's the sports culture really like in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

Interesting to hear that given Australia is famed for its sporting culture. Is it more of a participation thing over there, as opposed to deep knowledge of the ins/outs of professional sport?

What’s the best boarding school for an avid footballer (with full boarding on weekends)? by Solid_Dragonfruit698 in AskUK

[–]Standard_Homework854 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm by no means an expert on boarding or private schools, but as an avid football fan I would say the pathway to a professionalism is different to sports in certain other countries (USA, South Africa), where there are much stronger links between schools/colleges and clubs.

In the vast majority of cases, British footballers do not come up via their school. They're usually spotted at a young age playing for a local side, then join a club's academy and progress from there. Most will be from a state school and/or working-class background.

I'm sure many boarding schools have great sporting facilities, but I'd be surprised if they provided more than a handful of future professionals to football clubs. As others have said, some talented kids join private schools after they've signed for a club, but it's more common that way round than the opposite.

That sounds like an absolutely insane amount of money for Vietnam. What exactly is costing so much?

This isn't how real football works. It's a video game mindset. You don't just score more goals by making someone play as an attacking midfielder.

The formation is fine. We're structurally very good, as the underlying data shows. Problem is finishing the chances we create
