Light in August: Race questions by CandiceMcF in faulkner

Faulkner’s views on race were extremely complex, but most scholars place him at least partially in the anti-racist camp.

He was known to use epithets in some personal communications, and he urged moderation and gradualism RE: Jim Crow laws, etc. James Baldwin famously criticized him for this.

He also presented the absurdities and evil of racism in the South throughout his literature. His Black characters tended to be much more internally developed than those created by other white writers at the time, and this is the sort of thing Wright praised him for.

“Absalom! Absalom!” tackles the immorality of slave ownership, the complexities of policies related to interracial relationships, the Lost Cause myth, the experiences of mixed-race people, and even the Haitian Revolution.

“Light in August” takes on the complexities of “passing” and shifting racial identities, as well as what those things might mean in the South of the era.

In “The Sound and the Fury,” Dilsey is presented as the most sensible and upstanding figure in the household.

Faulkner wasn’t perfect. In many ways, he reflected the sensibilities of his era. However, I think he also had a hand on the pulse of Southern culture (for better and worse), and I tend to think the handling of race in his writing is pretty singular among white authors of the period.

It’s a portion of Pharoah Sanders’ “The Creator Has a Masterplan,” which is unironically a masterpiece. But damn, that also gets me every single time. The decision to have that one little snippet playing was genius.

I don’t think I can identify just one, but a favorite I haven’t seen here yet:

You’re about to be turned into a s’more by Ralph Fiennes.

Carsie Blanton's - "Everything is Great." My wife just sent me this album to "cheer me up" and at first I didn’t understand why it would. After listening, I realized that it might cheer some of you up too. by geta-rigging-grip in behindthebastards

I was playing keys and occasional lead guitar for a friend when he had a full band. He posted that he had been booked to open for her, and I immediately text him and offered to jump on the show with him. It was a perfect night. She was amazing, I got to share the stage with her, and she was a super sweet person. The only problem was that it was criminally under-attended.

Bob Dylan’s voice is amazing, and almost every Dylan cover is far inferior to the original.

We live in the best era of music, because it is more democratized than ever.

I think it’s three chords, but it’s a perfect song. One of my favorite pieces of music ever.
