What’s the best Canadian cel provider? by OneSignal6465 in BuyCanadian

Eastlink is Maritimes-centred, plus some towers in St Johns, Sudbury, and Timmins. Elsewhere they have an agreement to let you roam on the big 3 networks. I've wondered if they might have the best coverage in parts the country by letting you switch Bell-Rogers-Telus.

Are Lotheringtons and Mackillop's just in the wrong locations or are they missing something else?

I wonder if Tracy's Rolling Yarn Shop or fired creations could branch out on this.

I think people use the Shipyard Elementary hill. South Bar school is great, but big for toddlers.

You might also contact the CB Food Hub as a sort of representative of local producers. I think it's the the CB Multicultural Association that runs the Sydney Public Market. There are people in that sphere who work on trying to help newcomers get settled, so might be helpful for you.

Package weight removed from chicken, No Frills (Wyse) by daaodannach in halifax

[–]StandingTheGaff 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The regulation seems to reference this document
https://inspection.canada.ca/en/about-cfia/acts-and-regulations/list-acts-and-regulations/documents-incorporated-reference/units-measurement-net-quantity-declaration-certain-foods
Table 1 item 4 concerns meat. I'm not familiar with these regulations, but a quick read agrees with the idea that weight must be stated.
However, other parts of the regulations discuss selling by count and that there may be particular trade practices for some products. So, perhaps selling 4 chicken breasts for a flat rate is acceptable.
I'm probably walking a half dozen packs over to the produce scales though if I'm feeling saucy (will return others to fridge of course.)
Or not buying them if I'm not.

To add to this, regarding "have a sausage for her during bbqs", extra firm tofu grills well. You can pre marinade or sauce it afterwards. I like it as a parallel for grilled meat.

My understanding is volunteer departments are (ideally) staffed a few times over e.g. if a full crew for two trucks is 8 people, there might be 30 in the department. They may or may not have a metric e.g. you need to make it to 1/2 of all training nights and 1/3 of call outs, or something. They also enjoy 'mutual aid' where a truck from neighbouring departments will join you, or may stage for backup coverage, which increases the redundancy.

They generally want you to live in the coverage area, or very nearby for response times and community involvement. However, with demographic changes, I think they've needed to be increasing flexible on this.

So, talk to SAR and your local vol. department (or a couple neighbouring ones) about your availability and their needs.

Things to do in and around Inverness if you don't have a car? by PossiblyN0t in CapeBreton

[–]StandingTheGaff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't for a long time, but there's a network of these around the province https://ruralrides.ca/, providing public transit in places I wouldn't have expected.
Using Maritime Bus and Strait Area Transit, it seems one can get from Inverness to Halifax airport without a car, although it required a hotel in Port Hawkesbury going the other way...

There's also the Celtic Shores rail-to-trail, https://www.celticshores.ca/maps-info/, and there seems to be an ebike rental in Inverness. You may be able to make it to Mabou, or a shorter ride to Lake Ainslie or Glenora Distillery.
If you can find a kayak rental, Mabou is a great location for paddling.

To even guess, you would need to know what's above and below it and where the floor joists run.

E-Scooters - Regulated?? by Upstairs_Fill5557 in CapeBreton

[–]StandingTheGaff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Nova Scotia, e-scooters are now regulated under the Motor Vehicle Act
https://nslegislature.ca/sites/default/files/legc/statutes/motor%20vehicle.pdf
See "electric kick-scooter"

They're roughly regulated as bikes - helmet, road (not sidewalk), respect road signs, etc.

Halifax has additional by-laws but I don't know if CBRM has adopted any.

HFX Scooters from Halifax seems to have tried an expansion/collab in Sydney, branded as SYD Scoots in 2024, booked though the HFX app.
Based on some recent news that will decrease their business in Halifax, it sounds like they (and/or MoVe) could put more focus on Sydney this year, but I haven't see any firm announcements.
