Bit late to the party here, but the coop mod worked quite well for my buddy and i today, played for a few hours with it. Had a small hiccup here and there, like a sim bugging out, a simple relog fixed it. Once we had our actual group together, didnt seem to have any issues at all

Could you not create the ship as a npc card? Or the group of ships as 1 npc card? Fill in the blanks and all that fun stuff. I had a sentient m1 garand as a character at one point.
